Wireless distance

I am using a Dell 4700 with a Comccast cable hookup.  Am considering going to wireless network in my home.

The 4700 is located in the finished basement home office and I am considering a laptop for the main floor of the house and possibly  also to be used on the second floor.

My question is will the network work at optimum performance for both computers at this distance?  Is there some rule of thumb for distance which include the obstacles of floors between computers?

Are there any kind of impediments that would impact file and printer sharing?

Thanks

Re: Wireless distance

there's no simple answer and it's very environmentally dependent -- i have an access point on my main floor and get a great signal on the floor above and below it.  two floors may be pushing things, but it's hard to say in advance
