unable to renew IP address & no wireless connection

I have a 700m inspiron.

I am not able to get a wireless connection.  I am able to get a connection with my ethernet cable.

I have tried trouble shooting this myself in several ways.

I went through the repair process, reinstalled drivers, and tried some command prompts.

Any other ideas or steps I can take?

Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

Are you seeing you wireless network in the wireless network listing.

Are you running any security on the wireless network?

Have you checked your firewall settings. try turning it off temporairly.

Boot the system into safemode with network support and see if it will connect.

I see this connection in the wireless network list but it says "problem"next to it.

When I click on "connection details" it says that I have excellent connection, etc....

When I click on "repair"....it tries to renew my IP address and then it responds with "Intel PROSet/Wireless was unable to repair your connection."

*****

I am always running Norton 360 and today I did some other reccomended sweeps

****

I am not farmiliar with how to change my firewall settings...or how to turn it off temporarily.  Would you be able to help with that?

I also have not tried safemode with network support.  Should I try the other first?

Thank you so much!!!

You boot into safe mode with network support. once in Safe mode with network support see if you can connect wirelessly. If you can then that means there is something interfering with the connection in normal mode.

I cannot get a wireless connection in safe mode either.

I have another wireless laptop here (dell latitide) that is getting a wireless connection so I don't think it is my 2 wire (DSL Router).

I appreciate you help and any other ideas that you might have.

Thanks,

Laura

Ok lets go back to basics.

Did the wireless connection ever work?

What OS are you running.

open device manager and look at the listing for the network adapters. note if there are any ! or X next to them.

Are you running any type of security on the wireless network?

What are you using to manage the adapter. The intel software or windows wirless zero?

The wireless connection has always worked up until recently (1 or 2 weeks ago).

I did  not make any major changes right before the loss of connection.  When the connection stopped working I update and install service pac 3 because I thought that it might have something to do with that.  .....but that was after I lost the wireless.

OS:  Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3

I pulled up my Network adapters and there are no ! or X next to any of them.  There are 3 things listed.

~ 1394 Net Adapter

~ Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller

~ Intel (R) Pro/Wireless 2200 BG

I'm not sure about security.  I do have Norton 360.....I have my wireless connection protected in that no once can use it without a code that is on my 2wire.

I am not sure what I am using to mange the adapeter.....If I had to choose between the 2 you listed I would guess intel.

Thanks,

Laura

ok now lets try temporiarly disabling the norton firewall follow these steps:

Re: Temporarily disable the firewall Norton 360

It may be necessary to disable the protection briefly to perform certain tasks, such as to install new software or a problem to configure your modem / router

Disabling protection makes your computer vulnerable. Norton 360 displays a warning message to let you know. Remember to reactivate protection as soon as possible.

To enable or disable protection Norton 360

  • Right click on Norton the icon in the systray

  • Click open the window of tasks and settings

  • Click Change advanced settings

  • Click Firewall

  • On the left side of the window parameters, perform the following operation

  • Select Off

  • Then click Apply

  • A window opens, allowing you to choose how long the firewall must be disabled

  • Choose the time and click OK. Then click Close

  • To turn the firewall, follow the same way but select On

I gather that that didn't work either. :emotion-6:

Try these steps

Problems with Network Connectivity
If you cannot connect to the wireless network, try the following:
Check Network Settings
1.From the General page, check that the Network Name (SSID) and operating mode are correct.
If the laptop is configured for ad hoc networking, make sure that the channel is correct.

2.To correct these settings, click the Networks tab.

3.Select the profile being used.

4.Click the Edit button and make the changes.

Check Security Settings
1.From the General page, check that the security settings are correct.

2.To correct the security settings, click the Networks tab.

3.Select the profile being used.

4.Click the Edit button.

5.Click the Security tab. Make sure that the settings for WEP encryption are correct.

Checking Adapter Statistics
Adapter Statistics
If the adapter is communicating with an access point (infrastructure mode) or othercomputers in peer-to-peer mode,
click the Statistics button in the Troubleshooting tab to display the current information about how well the adapter
 is transmitting and receiving information.

You already have window wireless zero on the system so you don't need to download anything.

I do want you to get this file winsok XP fix. just download the file and run it.

I have a help file for the proset, as i used to run that but when i go my linksys adapter I removed it. I will go through it to refresh my memory and hopefully offer some more help.

I am also thinking that the adapter might have died but am holding out hope this is not the case.

I went ahead and enabled the wireless connection and it says it still says that the wireless adapter failed to get a valid IP address.
