I went to your site and it is amazing! You do a great deal of work and I really appreciate all you are doing. I have a question about my Dell Inspiron (says "17R" , but all I see for it is "17) N7010, Intel i5, Windows Home Premium 7 Sp1 x64. Yes, the laptop is a bit of an antique, but until my son finishes the desktop he is building for me, this is the only computer I have. Because of a major problem in 2012 with being a beta tester for a certain program, my original harddrive was destroyed and I was given a new one. However, a lot of things changed regarding the original bios and hardware. So first, my question is, even though this is an Intel everything, why does it have AMD64 when I peruse device manager? My system environmental variables identify it as correct, but not device manager. It's running ok so it's just a generic type of question as to why it has an identity crisis -so to speak. More specifically, I have a DWLAN1501 wireless adapter that had a windows  driver for it on 12/9/.2009. I guess that driver was not a good fit for Windows 7 so a newer driver 5.60.48.18-even though same number as original-was released-a week later. However, every time I've tried to install the  December 16th driver, windows device manager will not let me. It says it didn't pass the WHQL or whatever it's called for the compatible driver certificate, even though the certificate that came with the later released driver states it did pass. Both drivers have something called a DWLAN Configuration Utility for the advanced settings of the driver and a help manual. However, the advanced config. device has some settings on it that are not on the adapter's advanced settings I have installed. I know, this is confusing as anything, but I don't know why the utility and help manual came a long with the adapter to begin with other than, unlike most of these half mini's-this one is a dual band. I haven't however, tried to use it on the 5Ghz network as I can't even get it to run right at the basic 2.4(or whatever) Ghz.  The issue is, it is supposed to be functioning at 72million bits. I've run it through several checks and performance monitor tells me it is only running at 6700 bits! My question is, is there a way I can fix this or should I just buy a wireless USB adapter that goes with my Linksys ea6900? When I go to download, compared to the adapters configured for the five other wireless adapters we have, including our Android tablets, the speed for downloads is outrageous-sometimes taking two-three minutes for 20MB.I have Comcast as my ISP and the speeds are phenomenal except for this laptop, I noticed you do have a driver that matches my hardware device numbers, but you don't mention the DWLAN configuration utility that appears to be part and parcel to this adapter. Thanks for any advice you can give and I would recommend everyone take a look at your blog. Wish you had addressed the Dell Inspiron 17 N7010 under your amazing list of laptops and desktops, but you do enough all ready. Thanks again "Rock Star"!

Thanks for your response. As I perused a bunch of boards regarding the DWLAN1501 half-mini, it was a failed wireless card to begin with so I'm just going to temporarily use a USB dual wireless adapter. As far as the "innards" of this poor excuse of a very expensive laptop goes, it is Intel, and I installed the right CPU driver so it quit reporting in device manager it was an AMDPPM(?)-didn't pay attention until -just found the right .inf file and all is well.  From what I also garnered over this DWLAN 1501, it was no great shakes to begin with as the speeds have always been deplorable so even doing a better upgrade on the driver isn't going to do too much. I had gone to that forum and did the change, but it didn't help me much-none of the Advanced settings, if you tried to "tweak" them did much-except throw me off the network and then with every reboot, it takes forever for the wireless adapter to connect to the network-with or without "tweaks"-it still does it! Also, I am stymied over why some of them are dual capable, as mine is and others are not. However, it's another moot point as the card was not made for speed. By the way, despite the high-end price of this laptop when I first got it, it didn't have a dedicated graphics card-my BIG error. Oh, well, live and learn. However, thanks so much, again, for your help. I know a lot of people with Dell laptops and desktops and posted your link so I hope you don't mind. Again, you really went out of your way to help numerous people and I suppose Dell's paid support end may have not been too pleased. I got nailed over a mistake they made with this laptop, jumped through hoops trying to deal with corporate and others to get it replaced(heck, they do recalls on cars, don't they),but it was a three-month waste of time. Even when I had two hospital's CEO's write about how back in the mid-90's, I told them to buy Dell for their medical facilities rather than a competitor's. So, a Dell employee told me to post what happened to me on the board, but that didn't go over well. I really don't care as I plan on using this one as a "toy" as my son is finishing up the one I asked him to build for me and believe me, this new desktop is going to be one sweet machine. Anyhow, thanks for your help and I learned quite a bit from your site and hope more people find it-especially those stuck with Dell! Have a great forever and thanks again!  :emotion-5:
