XPS 1530 Burns Only Faulty Discs?

Hi, first time poster here.

I burn a lot of dvd's because I work in video.  But the XPS has never burned one I could play on anything but the laptop.

When I put it into a dvd player or my x-box or anything, the disc jumps around nonsensically.  For instance, the dvd will start playing in the middle of the movie and not let you access the menu.  It plays a few seconds there, then jumps to the beginning of the disc and plays a while there, then goes to the menu.  It is completely sporadic.  But it plays back fine on the XPS!

Fed up with this, I bought an external burner today.  I burned the disc with it, and I had the exact same problem as before.  I am at my wits end with it all and don't have the slightest clue what could be causing it.  Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!

One has to wonder if it is a problem with your burning software if the same thing happens with both the internal and a new external drive.

Are you burning DVD+ or DVD- media.  As I understand it DVD- is the more compatiable media

What burning software are you using?

What brand of disks are you using and who actually makes it?

Have you tried a different brand of disks or at least some from a different package?

How fast are you burning the disks?  I've found over the years that burning DVDs at 4x yields a MUCH better burn and better compatibility with set top DVD players.

Addendum:  And are you doing anything during the burns?  Depending on your system, OS, and amount of ram you might not be able to do much while burning.  When I have problems with disks not playing one of the first things I do is make sure that I shut everything else down when I burn a disk, and that includes Instant Messengers, E-Mail, and Web Browsers.

Re: XPS 1530 Burns Only Faulty Discs?

I'm going to try burning it slower to see if it helps.  I have tried switching DVD types several times (some -, some +, and various brands) and they've all had the same problem.

For the purposes of this experiment I am using DVD Shrink which uses Nero 8.  I just reinstalled both programs.  I tried burning some DVD's with Pinnacle Studio 11 also, and they had the same problem.  I'll try closing everything down and burning it at 4x.  Here's hoping.

I thought of that too, but it does the same thing with both kinds of discs.

Okay, I just tried doing a few burns with all other programs closed, and set at a slow burning speed, but there was still the same problem.  What is really baffling is that they work perfectly when played on the laptop but skip around frenetically on any other DVD player.

It does this with any kind of DVD too.  Hmm.

What brand and model number of DVD burner is installed in your system?  You might want to check to see if there is a firmware update for it on the manufacturers site as well as a list of certified disks.

Re: XPS 1530 Burns Only Faulty Discs?

I tried that too.

Actually, last night I caved and took it to Best Buy.  It's still under the warranty so they shipped it to the manufacturer.  Hope that takes care of it.

But thanks for the help everybody!
