fFailed Internet Connection

I have a Dell Dimension C521 running Vista Home Premium.

For the past two weeks I have been having trouble with my France Telecom/Orange Livebox and although FT/O tell me that there is nothing wrong with my live box or my connections, I still have no internet.  By process of elimination I think there might be something wrong with my ethernet cable or, someone has suggested that it may be that my ethernet card (?) has disappeared.  At the moment, I am using a dongle on a very old and very slow lap top but I would appreciate it if anyone can throw some light on the problem and how I go about fixing it please.  I am unable to use Dell Support in France as I speak very little French which is a problem in itself.

How does an ethernet card "disappear"? How were you able to determine that?

If you think the Ethernet cable is faulty, it is very simple to try another Ethernet cable. Borrow from a neighbor or a friend.

There is a Broadcom diagnostics utility that you can download from Dell.com if you don't have it on your PC already. See what that tells you.
