The HDD is nice and toasty,you need a new drive.

Yup, drive is dead or dying. If you can still access it and boot to Windows, I would definitely back up any important data to an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or even CD/DVD, because you'll probably need a new drive soon. If the system is still in warranty, you may be able to get a replacement shipped out.

Maybe your HDD is dead, but I would not go out and replace it yet. This error is also given from the CD or DVD drive when you have a read-only disk in it while testing it. Before you give up on your hard drive run Chkdsk, Fdisk or a similar utility to inspect and fix, if necessary, those areas in your hard drive which might have a bad block.
