7040 CPU Upgrade
Hi,
My 7040 currently have i7 6700 and I would like to upgrade it to 7700 or 8700 if it is possible. I couldn't find any documents about it. I would appreciate it if anyone could share link for me to check. Thanks.

You have a 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processor
from 2015.
7Th GEN core I7 7700
or
8th GEN core I7 8700
Intel wants you to buy new chipsets and new processors which is why they keep changing things. Fitting into the socket is only 1 parameter.

And finally, in my opinion ... the Intel i7-6700 is a nice/fast processor and a "good fit" for this class of machine.

The Intel Q170 chipset is compatible with the Intel Core i7-7700T processor according to Intel support. The question would be if Dell supported its bios for this cpu.

I just tried i7-7700 with OptiPlex 7040 SFF and it does NOT work (Motherboard: DELL 0HD5W2, Chipset: Intel Q170, Skylake PCH-H, BIOS Date: 05/27/2020, BIOS Version: 1.17.0).
My current CPU is i5-6500.

What are you saying? Is the I7 8700 compatible with the Dell Optiplex 7040?

@Jfreeman5 No it is not. The Q170 chipset doesn't support 8th or 9th generation cpus. In short, you can only use 6th and 7th generation cpus in the socket for it work. You also may need a BIOS update for 7th gen cpus.
