Best GPU for a Dell Optiplex 7010 DT?

I just bought a refurbished OptiPlex 7010 DT and want to find a good GPU that will fit and work in a DT. I think the GT 1030 will work, but maybe the GTX 1050 2 GB will work too. If not what will? Has to meet the power requriements of the PSU and the board.

Hello DerekGraham,

Optiplex 7010 DT has a power supply with 250 W and the GTX 1030 recommended power supply requirement is 300 W. Hence, I would not recommend using GTX 1030. However, below are the two graphics card tested and recommended by Dell, which you may consider upgrading to:

  • amd radeon hd7570
  • amd radeon hd7470

Feel free to revert in case of any additional query.

GTX 1050 might work without upgrading the PSU. However, the recommended power supply requirement for it is 300W. In response to your request about supported NVIDIA graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 640GT is compatible with Optiplex 7010 DT.

I have seen videos of people using the GTX 1050 ti without upgrading the PSU, are there any better cards you guys can recommend that might work? Something by NVidia maybe, those AMD Radeon cards tend to get quite hot

thank you

best for what , best has no real meaning out of context of what Applications you run, 100,000 applications and endless games from cream puff games to AAA+ 60% games, what? (and how much to spend on old PC)?) they all work if it fits and does not overload the PSU, those numbers you used, are not cards, those basing chip based series of cards, 10 makers and 100s of cards. all different sized too. and ram not the same and 1,2,3 fans or super think. but you didn't measure you case first. A to B, in the x16 slot? using a ruler.? the DT case is the tin case, (wrong one to buy MT is correct) and needs 1/2 height cards, and those get way too long fast. put a 1050 card in this PC , any that fits. ever look on Newegg, type 1050 in the box and look./? takes 1min.

so you opened the lid yet,?

then see that nasty odd, non ATX PSU, sure.

then with a ruler AC power cord unplugged,

measure this RED line below to see how much space is there.

Look for an nVidia GTX 1650 (low profile version). Made by MSI or Zotac, maybe a few others.

This is the ONLY current generation graphics card that is low profile. Buy locally if possible, as sometimes Dell motherboards have limited compatibility with newer graphics cards. AMD has a low profile RX 550 as well, but it's a bit older. GT 1030 is old too, but be very careful of the GT 1030 as it might use the older DDR3 VRAM. If you are feeling adventurous in the future, you can do a case swap, upgrade the power supply, and that'll open up a lot more graphics card options for you.

1650 card requires class 2.3.1 uefi so that would never work

7010 machines have legacy bios and support msdos and windows xp.

So they will never have UEFI for windows 8 or 10.

I would Recommend a GT1030 2GB GDDR5

AVOID DDR4 versions

MT Dell can use 8CCF1  GT1030

https://dell.to/2Xs1Hcq

NON DELL CARDS will require SECURE BOOT OFF and LEGACY OPTION ROMS ON for 7020 9020 etc.  7010 does not have secure boot and never will.

The one in the picture which speedstep provided is what I'm running in my Optiplex 7010, with Secure Boot off & running in UEFI mode. All is fine.

I would had considered a 1050 or newer, but upgraded the CPU to a i7-3770, didn't want to overload the PSU. Was looking for an upgraded model, thought I found a 300W one on Amazon, although there was no SATA or other power connectors, just the 24 for the MB & 4 pin for CPU. So I didn't buy it.

If I can find a known compatible 300 (or higher) PSU that's compatible with the Optiplex 7010, will purchase, as long as there's a return option in writing.

Otherwise, that MSI GT 1030 LP OC 2GB GDDR5 is running well, has not only the latest HDMI spec (2.0b), also Displayport 1.4. Has no issues pushing a 28" Samsung 4K monitor, have found the DP connection provides the best screen quality. Just make sure to get a DP 1.4 cable if used on a monitor with DP 1.4 connection, the Samsung mine's on is DP 1.2, so had the cable on hand. Same for HDMI 2.0, make sure to have the 18Gbps cable, Monoprice carries these at a low price, am listing Amazon first because they ship faster.

https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Certified-Premium-HDMI-Cable/dp/B01GCGKI3O?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B01GCGKI3O

Monoprice link, costs less, slower shipping. On promo as of this date (12/17/2019). I recommend the 6 foot length because the shorter (3 foot) leaves little room, bought a 3 pack on Amazon & can use only one for my Roku Ultra.

https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=15428

If the monitor has a lower spec HDMI or Displayport then the older standard (HDMI 1.4, or DP 1.1) cables will do just fine. The Samsung monitor I'm running that PC on has one HDMI 2.0, one HDMI 1.4 & one DP 1.2, of course SDR. Haven't tried on my HDR monitor yet, however I feel that a 64 bit GPU may be pushed to it's limits, as well as run well past it's 30W output.

For the price & it's intended target (low profile, low power usage), the MSI GT 1030 LP OC 2GB GDDR5 is as good as it gets. When & if NVIDIA produces a newer model that runs at the same power level (or close), I'll consider purchase. Note that I didn't buy it for the Optiplex 7010, rather a Optiplex 780, where it ran for over a year. However since the switch, I can see how the Core 2 Quad 9650 was a bottleneck to the card, performance gain can be seen with the i7-3770.

As speedstep warned, watch out for DDR4 versions, there are many. I purchased the MSI model above for $79.99 on Newegg, just before the price increase. There's an EVGA model that's (likely) as good, actually my preferred brand, but was $20 more. There are at least two of the brand which has 2GB GDDR5, one with a passive cooler. the other a fan, of which I prefer & is best for the 7010 DT chassis.

The Optiplex 7010 DT is a decent PC, by chance if one can find a MT case in need of repair for low cost, it uses the same MB. Then one can install a larger PSU & whatever GPU desired.

Good Luck!

I am running a Dell OptiPlex 7010 SFF with following specs:

  • 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i7 3770 3.40GHz, 8M, VT-x, VT-d, TXT (vPro™), 77W
  • ASUS GeForce GTX 1650 OC LP 4GB GDDR5 (GTX1650-O4G-LP-BRK) (LP = Low Profile)
  • Crucial Ballstix 2x8GB 1600MHz DDR3 PC3-12800 240-pin
  • 128GB SSD & 320GB HDD
  • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

Motherboard specs:

  • Dell Part Number: GXM1W, 0GXM1W
  • CPU Type Socket LGA 1155
  • Intel Q77 Chipset
  • Micro-ATX Form Factor
  • BIOS Version: A29 (latest as of 18. July 2018)

My PC is running perfectly. No problems at all.
You can run a GTX 1050Ti and 1650 just fine, they barely use any power.
Hell, I even overclock my graphics card and nothing is wrong, temperatures are fine, everything is working as it should.
My SFF has a width of 9.3cm and I use a Low Profile card. Your DT has a width of 10.2cm, so barely larger, you will only be able to use a Low Profile GPU. The BEST low profile GPU currently on the marktet (December 2019) is the GTX 1650 I specified above. I bought one from ASUS because it has the highest clock speed and a cool OC tool.
I would recommend the GTX 1650 in this order:

1. ASUS GTX 1650 LP: https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GTX1650-O4G-LP-BRK/
2. GIGABYTE GTX 1650 LP: https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N1650OC-4GL#kf
3. ZOTAC GTX 1650  LP: https://www.zotac.com/de/product/graphics_card/zotac-gaming-geforce-gtx-1650-low-profile
4. NEVER buy the MSI GTX 1650 LP. It has no DPI connector, so it is basically useless as you never want to run your GPU with a HDMI cable.

Also 7010 does have Secure Boot and they can run in UEFI, don't listen to this misinformation being spread here, I have no clue why @speedstep keeps feeding people with wrong information (not sure if troll or not).
7010 can run in UEFI and Legacy and supports Windows 10 just fine.
Here are screenshots of my system BIOS and msinfo32 (you know, as proof):

As stated prior & speedstep recommended, the MSI GT 1030 LP OC (2GB GDDR5) is a great choice for the Optiplex 7010. Speccy spec with GPU installed below.

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/kIrsCTFwDak0wKlCUgPNy2C

System has been running good for over 2 weeks, just got through with another successful CPU delid of the i7-3770, temps have nosedived from previous 85C & higher. MBAM Full scan running at this moment, prior to delid, was always over 80C. The thermal paste was near totally dry, was able to wipe most off with a Q-Tip. Unlike Haswell & newer CPU's, there's no electrical contacts close to the die area, so coated the silicon with clear nail polish & used two tiny drops of Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut liquid metal compound. Now can't force the system to hit 70C & it's not fully cured yet (takes 5-6 power cycles with a couple hours rest in between).

BTW, one thing that helps the GT 1030 (2GB GDDR5) run cooler, around 35-44C, is it's really a x4 card (electrically) running in a x16 slot. If this were the MT, would add a EVGA G3 550-650 Gold & run the card of my choice. The reason why I'm not doing so now is that most of the damaged models (broken MB's) are being replaced for $20-25 & system resold for over $100. So it's hard to find a case, otherwise would transplant mine into a MT & add a spare 4GB GDDR5 GTX 770 Classified (the 2nd best card EVGA had at release & still holds it's own today).

As for Optiplex 7010 DT, I have to agree with speedstep, the MSI GT 1030 LP OC is the best choice. I'll once again repeat what he has stated & I agreed with. Beware, there are some 'GDDR4' versions of the GT 1030, maybe some GDDR3, stay away. There's no need to have to settle for less than 4K performance if owning that type of monitor (or TV) with these old Dell cards (such as the Dell Radeon HD 7570 (1GB GDDR5). I've had a few of these & forget overclocking, can't get it to run at 1GHz (900MHz tops). The MSI GT 1030 can boost to over 1,800MHz (graphics), 3004MHz (memory) & 1633MHz (video) & I've not overclocked it, no need, it's done at the factory. One cannot ask for more from a x4 card running at 30W & no external power needed.

Also ships with a UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot option. My Optiplex 7010 DT as seen in my Speccy link above shows this, although I don't use the Secure Boot feature on any of my systems, purchased or self-built. This system was purchased for my wife, after upgrades (the GPU & RAM was on hand, will try a 32GB upgrade), and the purchase of a brand new PSU for just in case, have less than $200 invested total (PC, i7-3770, copper IHS from Rocket88 & PSU).

With these systems plentiful, why build if not intending to game hardcore or overclock? The only reason why I won't purchase a 7010 DT at this time is because grabbed a Optiplex 990 around Thanksgiving for $59.99 shipped, that's the system the GTX 770 Classified mentioned above is going in. Will have to remove & install the drive cage higher (there's YouTube videos on this, probably applies to the 7010 also) & use the spare x4 slot to run a 512GB Samsung 950 PRO on hand. It's one of the few NVMe SSD's that'll boot into Legacy mode using the Legacy ROM option in the BIOS, the SSD has it's own ROM for Legacy.

At any rate, don't want to stray too far off topic, one can be creative and make these Dell systems rock, as I've been doing for the past 16 years!

Good Luck, have fun & Rock On!

It's really ridiculous to see people on here recommending such outdated GPUs.
Once and for all, get a GTX 1650 Low Profile. It will fit just fine, it will run just fine and no you won't exceed your power limit as those cards use 75W max. and only run on the PCIe slot.

For anyone else looking for the BEST GPU for their 7010: 1650 Low Profile it is (given that you have a SSF etc.)

The MSI GT 1030 LP OC (2GB GDDR5) only uses 30W of power & can push a 4K monitor.

The Dell OEM 7570 (1GB GDDR5) uses 60 Watts of power & cannot push a 4K monitor. I know for a fact, have several that I need to unload on eBay.

In the meantime, am looking at the 1660 options for the Optiplex 7010 DT. I don't understand why one poster didn't recommend the MSI LP version, it has DP 1.4, HDMI 2.0(b) & a DVI connection (I presume for lesser resolution monitors).

Will post with a Speccy link when I decide what to get & have installed. Also am upgrading the CPU cooler to a Cooler Master Vortex, have already delidded the i7-3770, cleaned & used liquid metal instead of the dried out Intel thermal paste (didn't take long, it crumbled) & replaced the Intel IHS with a 100% copper replacement from Rockit88 (they also have the delid tool).

My Optiplex 7010 does have UEFI & am running in that mode, with Secure Boot Off. Note that there is no CSM mode, however one can boot from Legacy devices (such as partition/backup/Linux media) by leaving the Option Rom ON in the BIOS. If not left on, these will NOT boot.

As a rule of thumb, I do use Secure Boot & when I work on computers for others, do them the favor of turning it OFF. As well as running the command (as Admin) to ensure their computers fully shuts down (powercfg -f off), this saves wear & tear on the computer, especially notebooks. It's not good on the battery to have in a constant semi-Sleep mode. Just a gimmick imposed on OEM's by Microsoft to make consumers think their computers boots faster, when in reality, are simply waking from Sleep.

I'm tempted to go for a LP 1660, if it doesn't work, Amazon has an A to Z guarantee (in the US). Being a Prime member, can have within two days (maybe one) & return shipping is free.

I just got a Dell Optiplex 7010 DT around November 2019

i5-3470, 500GB Samsung Evo 860, 500GB Seagate Baracuda 7200 RPM HDD

Upgraded the ram to 2x 8GB Corsair Vengence 1600 MHz DDR3, working great

I just got the Low Profile OC Gigabyte GTX 1650 from Amazon today and have been using it. It works great! Couldn't be happier with it! I pretty much only play Fortnite with a controller and I'm getting over 100 FPS on low settings.

The 1650 is the most powerful card made in the Low Profile form factor at the moment. Here's a link to the one I got. I paid $150 for a new one, free Prime shipping:

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-Graphics-Windforce-Gv-N1650OC-4GL/dp/B081L3PSGK/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1X3QP2Q6KPA7G&keywords=gigabyte+gtx+1650+low+profile&qid=1579233411&sprefix=gigabyte+gtx+1650+low+%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-1

Hope this helps!
