Can my 315w PSU run a rx560?

Hey all, I’m new to here but I have a quick question. Do you guys think I’ll be able to run a rx 560 on a 315W power supply?

You can absolutely run a 75w GPU card on a 315w PSU.  Smart thinking using an XE2 SFF PSU in your 9020 SFF.

I'm guessing your CPU is topped out with an I7-4790?  Check out bottleneck %'s in the screengrabs below.  The good news with the RX 560 is since it's the weaker of the 2 as compared to the CPU, you'd still get full performance out of the RX 560.  Screengrabs are from PC Builds.

Whichever GPU you choose, you might already know you'll need the low profile versions.  I noticed there's different variations of the RX 560, so, if you choose that one, use the one that works for you.  While in Google I saw 45w, 60w, & 75w for the 560.  Then in the video I saw, the model shown takes an extra 6-pin connector.

The 300w XE3 SFF PSU has 6-pin power.

No sadly I still have a i5 that came with the PC I’ve been asking around and people say I won’t be able to run this card for some reason. The cpu is locked and doesn’t pull much power from what I’ve heard around so I really hope this works. Thanks for your reply!

You're welcome!

You're in luck.  If you go with the RX 560:

If you go with the GTX 1050 ti:

I have an i5 6500 dell optiplex 3040. Can I run the 315 watt power supply? It currently has 180 watt psi. I have a 1050ti low profile that'll be here tomorrow. Is the 315 a 240 with a 75 watt gpu supply or what are the extra wires for over the 240? Is the 365 maybe an option? I ordered the SF 450 as it's suppose to be an sff psu but it's an inch too wide

@bradthetechnut

4FCWX - Dell 315Watt Power Supply for Optiplex Xe2 might work but there isn't physical room for an RX560 in the SFF case

you would have to remove the cover and use a pci-e riser cable.

its a 2 slot full size cardits a 2 slot full size card

That's a real shame.

Besides the GT 1030, a couple of suitable GPU's for the 3040 (probably not much):  AMD Radeon™ R7 350X, AMD Radeon™ R5 340X

Optiplex 3040 Spec Sheet

Besides being an SFF, the 3040 is from a generation that is more limited for upgrading, notably for gaming since they are business machines.  This doesn't mean you can't go to YouTube and get some ideas there.  Not so many 3040's though.

To run the XE2's 315w PSU, you'd need an 8-pin to 6-pin adapter for power to the MB.  This doesn't mean I know for sure how the XE2 SFF PSU would fit in the 3040 SFF case, if it does fit.

@bradthetechnut

9020 sff has 8 pin power

"The 300w XE3 SFF PSU has 6-pin power." NO IT DOES NOT

315W 4FCWX D315ES-00 is for Optiplex XE

has 8 pin power connector WHITE, 4 pin power connector WHITE

and 6 pin PCI-E  Brown

So I'm not sure why you give advice that is contradicted by the parts

8 pin and 6 pin PCI-E and 4 pin CPU8 pin and 6 pin PCI-E and 4 pin CPU

@speedstep ,

"So I'm not sure why you give advice that is contradicted by the parts."  Responding with an immediate accusation does not belong in this forum.

I will stand corrected.  For some reason, what I originally Googled was incorrect.

3040 SFF has 8-pin+4-pin power.  XE3 SFF has 6-pin+4-pin.  See screengrabs.

@speedstep - So where do you get the XE3 doesn't have 6-pin?

"315W 4FCWX D315ES-00 is for Optiplex XE" - Sure it's not for the XE2 SFF?

Not sure why you referenced the 9020.  Though it's still in the subject bar, the conversation shifted to the 3040 SFF.
