Can optiplex 3080 3090 psu be upgraded to 7080 7090 psu

Entry level 3080 3090 motherboard has only one 4 pin + 6 pin.  Psu 260w.

mid/high tier 5080/7080/5090/7090 boards have two 4 pin + 6 pin.  Psu 260, 300, 360, 500w.

it is expected that more users of 3080 3090 would consider upgrade the 260w psu to higher rating support discrete graphics.

Can Dell validate compatibility of 7080 7090 psu with 3080 3080, yes or no?

it appears 3080 3090 stock psu is compatible with 3070, 3060, 5070, 5060 based on 3080 service manual photo.  Both 3080 3090 manual shows DP/N H7X3F.  This psu has one 4 pin + 6 pin, also used in 5060, 5070 etc.

based on some user report, the 7080 500w psu causes blinking amber error and no POST in 5060.  However no harm to motherboard reported as it works again with stock psu.

If the 6 pin pinout of 260w and 500w psu is identical, is it possible the reported incompatibility is due to two 4 pins of 500w?  Do both need to be connected to motherboard in order for the 500w psu to function properly?

of note, 5080 7080 5090 7090 stock psu all include the low power 260w.  Does the 260w psu for 7080 7090 etc. have one or two 4 pin?  Can Dell moderator release the DP/N of these 260w psu?

users who own 500w Dell psu in 7080 or 8940 can perform simple test like this: unplug one of the two 4 pin connector from motherboard, test whether psu can still boot up system.

looks like 260w psu DP/N 2KG1D for 7080 has two 4 pin+ 6 pin, whereas 260w psu for 3080 DP/N H7X3F has one 4 pin+ 6 pin.

it is possible that both 4 pin connector of 260w psu of 7080 need to be connected to motherboard cpu power sockets in order to boot, otherwise one gets a 2 + 2 blink amber error of “bad psu cabling”.  If so, that would prevent 3080 user from upgrading to higher power 7080 Dell psu.

It is interesting to note that Optiplex XE3 (Intel 300 series chipset, 8th gen cpu) motherboard has only one 4 pin + 6 pin, based on service manual photo and user uploaded real photo.

so XE3 motherboard appears similar in design to 7070/7060/7050 etc with only one 4 pin + 6 pin.  Note 7060/7070 both have Intel 300 series chipset too.

this brings up hope that the 360w psu of XE3 can be compatible with 7070/60/50.

In my opinion, you shouldn't buy a dell power supply if you are upgrading. Dell makes specific power supplies for specific models, and using another power supply might not work the same for 2 different models. I'd suggest buying any other power supply and just buy a 24 pin to 8 pin adaptor. Hope this helps, let me know if you guys have any other questions! (The Adaptor only costs like $10-15)

you can use the Amazon 24 to 6 pin adapter if you decide to upgrade to non-Dell SFX psu.

what is the DP/N of your 260w stock psu?  thank you for sharing that the psu works when only one 4 pin is plugged in.  If you ever get the Dell 500w psu to work in 3080 please report back.

Thank you.  I am frankly surprised the Dell does this to confuse user reverse engineering their scheme yet again.  we thought we had figured it out.  now a psu w two 4 pin and one 6 pin works on 3080 motherboard that has only one 4 pin + one 6 pin.  this means the 260w psu can work with mobo when one of the two 4 pins are not connected to anything.  the mystery thickens.  is it the 3080 mobo bios that allows this?

Sorry do not check here much yes I added a fan have removed it again but if I add a new cooler il add back the rear fan to sata maybe with some kind of controller so it’s not full speed work out what’s best I don’t really game so not sure if I need a cooler ect I plan on getting the dell 7000 mt cause rear fan and 4x times ram sockets as I feel it’s faster than 2 duel to quad if that’s a thing in ram might not be but big dell fan enjoy
