Dell Optiplex 390 MT w/ GTX 1650

I want to upgrade my Dell just to run some light games and some video editing. Would a 1650 be compatible?

The 1650 I'd like to purchase

PC Specs:

  • i5-2400
  • 8GB ram (2x4gb)
  • 250gb WD Blue HDD
  • 120gb PNY SSD
  • 265w PSU

PNY GeForce GTX 1650 4GB Single Fan Graphics Card

if you want to game start at the PSU, the see if your card fits,

good luck with fit and no good PSU.

amazon **bleep** on spec,  use newegg or Pny.com first. leave amazon until later buy there if at all,

amazon did not even tell the actual pny model number, of the card, what a Pain that is.....

1.57” x 5.7” x 3.9”; Dual-Slot (card, wide, long, high) below. should work.

best i can tell it is PNP VCG16504SFPPB-O

and seen here

if yes, this is the low power version of the Turing chip card, 75watts

and if true will run, (if lucky , why not try it?)

next time find the card at PNY or tell the helper the true model of the card, 1650 is NOT IT.

VCG16504SFPPB-O

has to fit ?,seems yes.

the slot must not have silly 25watt limit on x16 slot?(IDK this takes long time to learn this, dell docs bad)

the PSU must handle 75extra watts, and this seems ok,

390 does not support UEFI based Models like the RTX series or GTX 1650.

Also does not support ATI UEFI R series video cards.

The 390 works with XP which is why its NOT COMPATIBLE with Secure boot or UEFI class 2.3.1 and up.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=t8t9p

Older pascal based SHORT cards work but require UPGRADED power supply.

290W is not sufficent for a 75W or greater card.

GT 1030 works in all models because its a 40W card.

  • Manufacturer part G10302PC
  • Dell part AA362018

This no power plug card works just fine,  the manual from the horses mouth shows us that the 390 MT model has a power draw of 75 watts to the PCI e 16x slot,  the one and only one you have in your machine.  And it will boot in UEFI mode or legacy.  Just make sure you have your bios upgraded to A14 and make sure to limit FPS to 60 so you get smooth as silk game play on even AAA titles minus the one's all of us know are hard to run on any card even top end one are taxed on them if trying to run at ultra ALL 144hz max res.  FPS limiting will remove bottlenecks 90% of the time. Hope this helps all who may come across this.  But also remember this 390 uses PCI e 2.0 not 3.0 so there will be a tiny performance decrease so keep it at 1080p 60hz and if your not happy with that go down to 720P for a massive boost on everything and boom that 60 dollar sleeper is now a game box.  And ALL please remember buy GPU new so you can RMA it aka refund/replace, so many people buy used and then 4 months in on a 7 hour gaming bender pooof that used GPU dies well goes to show you perhaps that is why the person was selling it perhaps

Here is a user with 550W power supply and 75W card having issues for the same reason.

This no power plug card works just fine.  That is bad advice because the 265W POWER supply only has 33w on the 3.3V rails 10 amps max.

3.3V @ 24 amps =75w

Max combined power for the 3.3V/5V rail is 90w

BARE MINIMUM recommended power supply has 24 amps on the 3.3V rails and 150w combined for the 3.3V/5V rails which is why EVGA 700BR is bare minimum recommended power supply for 75w video card.

The 1650 Super is a better card for only slightly more.  It's about equal to a standard 1660.

I would say upgrade to an i7 2600, but you have a 390 with a slower H61 chipset.  Dell didn't even offer the 390 with an i7because of the slower chipset.  Most Sandy Bridge boards have the faster Q65 chipset, like the 790 I have.
