Dell Optiplex 790 CPU upgrade

I would like to ask if I can upgrade my Core i5 2300 CPU to Core i5 3470?

I have Dell Optiplex 790 DT with BIOS version A22. Kindly reply with details!

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

According to game-debate , the gain from an I5-2300 to an I7-2600s would be a measly 20%.  In other words, 1.20x the performance.  Barely noticeable.  Going from quad core to quad core usually doesn't yield a lot of gain.

39% with the non-S version I7-2600.  Not sure why speedstep thinks an S version is the max for your DT.  It's the max for the USFF.

I don't think you can use a 3rd gen cpu, but I could be wrong. Even if it would work, there would be little if any gain. Even going to an i7 second gen wasn't enough to be worth the cost and effort for me.

If you need more performance, the best approach is a newer machine. There are some pretty decent refurbs available these days.

Hi;

The CPUs available for this computer's motherboard (LG1155 socket) are Sandy Bridge. The I5 3470 is an ivy bridge and does not fit. If you want to upgrade, and if you have a graphics card you can put up to a Xeon E3 1280 (which I use) and probably a Xeon E3 1290. The I5 2500 works very well (I tested) we can go to the I7 2600. On Aliexpress you can find cpus at attractive prices. Look at https://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket%201155%20(LGA1155).html
