Graphic troubles with an Optiplex 780 SFF

Hello everybody,
Hoping to be in the right place for the subject and that someone can help me,
I describe my concern. I have a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF. With a Intel core2 duo 8400 at 3GHz, 8gb ram, original hdd 7200Rpm, the rest is original. I put a graphics card on the PCIx16 port; an Nvidia GT710 2Gb DDR5.
Windows 7 x64. The card is recognized no worries. But however when i watch videos (youtube) or movies (VLC) in HD 720 / 1080P, it appears "jerks" as "lines" on fast scenes or not, it varies ...
I try to connect the PC on a other screen and that the same trouble... On GPUZ the port indicated is PCI 8x, same on the Nvidia control panel, max 8x. While on the Optiplex brochure the port is in 16x ... Anyone have an idea?

Some people talk about I/O for Sata3 which will take "PCI lines" I don't really understand ...
Maybe i need to enable/disable something in the BIOS?

I am lost...

Thank you in advance for your readings and maybe your answers, i'm available for more information if I forgot something.
Jean.

Hi again @Jeanvend,

I rechecked bottleneck on the GT 1030 to make sure I checked it against PC-Builds and not just Google.  With E8400 = 0.21% = great and with Q9650 = 23.03% = not good.  So, if you went with a GT 1030, I'd stay with the E8400.  Often, increasing RAM and switching to an SSD makes a more noticeable improvement in speed.

I'd still suggest the GTX 750 ti to go with the Q9650, but like redxps630 said, it doesn't come in 4GB in the size you need.

Maybe the problem is caused by the very small power supply of 235w. Most video cards require a bigger psu. The Optiplex was intended for business use not for watching movies or other high performance tasks.

Don't forget that windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. It's not safe to use it on the internet.

GT710 is an entry level card and it is only PCIex8, although the optiplex 780 slot is PCIex16. no surprise your movie play back on this card is limited.  it only takes 19W power so your issue isn't power here.

this card supports resolution 640x480 and 1280x720, i.e., 480p and 720p.

Also ran across this deal:  https://www.newegg.com/amp/gigabyte-geforce-gt-1030-gv-n1030d5-2gl/p/N82E16814125972

Did some Googling and the GT 710 came up as too weak for your CPU.

Bottleneck between the GT 1030 and E8400 came up as 8%, and anything below 10% is good.  With you mainly using it for movies and videos, I think it'll do fine.

Hi everybody

Thanks very much for your informations.

Im sad about the gt710, yes its a very low card...

I would like to use this optiplex like a media tower, so i need to buy a new card...

I see the 30w GT 1030 it look like great for what i wanna do and i use Hdmi cable.

But can i put a better one than the gt1030?

Maybe for playing old games?

What is the maximum graphic card watts i can use with my Psu?

I also would like to put a SSD, less power than a Hdd and maybe disconect the cd rom lector.

Thanks again for your help,

See you!

I'd like to recommend a better card, but almost can't with the 235w PSU.  If the 780 was an MT (mini tower) with 305w PSU, it would be a bit easier.

I still checked YouTube.  It looks like somebody did put a 75w GTX 1050 Ti in their 780 SFF, but I'm not sure how authentic it is with the claim of may be putting an I7 CPU in it.  YouTube List  You'll see in the list I Googled, 780 SFF + GTX 1050 Ti is a little rarer, but may not be impossible.  One YouTuber hooked up a watt meter and the system stayed around 135w while gaming.

I think you're also due for a newer PC, particularly an MT is better for a media tower.  I don't have a recommendation for a better PSU.

Up to you what you want to do.  GT 1030 is the safe bet, GTX 1050 Ti may have some risk.

Switching to an SSD is a very good idea.  SSD is not only faster, but less power hungry (only 5v instead of 12v) than an HDD.  No need to disconnect CD/DVD ROM or burner.

Re: Which Power Supply for Optiplex 9010 Upgrade?

I am currently using a MSI GTX 1050 Ti LP video card in an Optiplex 9010 with a stock 240w PSU, it just plugs into the PCI-express x16 slot using the low profile bracket. had a few issues to start with when I also upgraded the memory to 16GB RAM at the same time as installing the card but just had to move the RAM around and find the the socket to put each chip in, now works fine. Now looking at either swapping out the HDD for a SSD or maybe just add a SSD drive for windows and use the HDD for installing games onto

imo you would be wasting money buying 1000 series gpu to use in a core 2 duo E8400 3 Ghz pc. the cpu will bottleneck any decent gpu you put in. upgrade to a 2nd gen i5 or i7 cpu in optiplex 790 MT will open up many options for gpu to match cpu.

@redxps630, Thanks for the reminder.  I forgot about the C2D CPU.  On the plus side, a Core 2 Quad 9650 3.0GHz is cheap, usually around $40 on eBay.

@Jeanvend, One can also check bottleneck this way - In the Google search bar, for example, "E8400 GT 1030 bottleneck."  It's less than 8%, and anything below 10% is good.

If OP can upgrade to core 2 quad Q6600 (quite cheap <$9), gpu can be 650Ti.  If Q9650, gpu can be 650Ti boost.  Both gpu need 6 pin power connector though.

Edit: the above  recommendations are only good for 780 MT w 400W psu upgrade.
a better gpu option is GTX 750 Ti which does not need 6 pin. Recommended psu is 300W.

If SFF psu can be upgraded to 280-300W, hdd cage removed and hdd/ssd installed in 3.5” media card reader bay, then GTX 750Ti is a pretty good upgrade option.

Graphic card and processor will work great together

Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti(Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 2.71% of bottleneck.

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti(Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 1.98% of bottleneck.

Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 0.58% of bottleneck.

We have to back-peddle a bit due to space constraints in the 780 SFF.  Here's a YT video with the 780 SFF and GT 1030, but it doesn't show installation.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eQCVb-gbs7M

Bottleneck would be less than 8% with your E8400.  23% with the Q9650 since GPU would be too weak for CPU.  So then the GTX 750 ti comes recommended.  If it's short, stout, and single bracket, it just might fit.  And wouldn't you know it, there's a YouTube List.

Bottleneck with E8400 = 11.94%.  2.71% with the Q9650.

A video I mentioned earlier of a YouTuber checking wattage - he fit his GPU by removing the HDD bracket.

Graphic card and processor will work great together

Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 (Clock speed at 100%) with AMD Radeon RX 550 (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 1.05% of bottleneck.

RX550 recommended system psu 400W

The shortest one I find is 170mm long close to 167mm OEM discrete card length for 780.  https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/Radeon-RX-550-4GT-LP-OC/Specification

@bradthetechnut @redxps630

Hello everybody,

Thanks a lot for your answer and all your knowledge, thanks more for share it!!!

I see a lot of video on Youtube and thanks for the links.

The Q9650 is a good option, i hope i can buy it at the end of the month, its very hard time now

For the PSU i'll find nothing about an upgrade, and im not an electronician do make one or adapt one.

I would like to stay with the 780sff, it dimensions are perfect for my living room furniture

and cant buy a new one pc...

So yes, my next objectives is:

Put an SSD and disable the hdd

Put the Q9560

And finally find a new graphic card.

But i can realise these steps only a the end of May...

There is some graphic card that i can find on a shop near my home:

For this one, maybe if she's ok for the Psu, i can adapt the case because i take of the HDD. She need 75W. But she expensive, like 200$... (im living in Switzerland).

I'm sure about the GT1030 with all your information, but if i can have 4gb its should be nice

Screenshot_20200503-201918_Samsung Internet.jpg

50W for the Rx550 LP OC...

Thanks agasin for your precious help,

See you!
