OS recovery error occurred while extracting image file

I'm having trouble creating a USB recovery drive.  I have a Optiplex 9200 that the hard drive went out.  I'm trying to create a USB recovery using my Dell XPS 8700 and keep getting the error "Sorry. An error occurred while extracting image file G13K9_PW4KGAoo_W7SP1Pro64_ROW(DL)_20180125-0406.iso. Please check the file and try again."

I've tried multiple USB thumb drive as well as downloaded the Recovery Tool on another computer, repeated the process and keep getting the same error.  HELP!

I am having the same problem. I can't even find the iso. file on my computer to use Rufus. Moreover, I called Dell and they would not help me because I am out of warranty. It seems like many many people have this problem and Dell is refusing to provide a solution.

You are posting to an old question. Nowadays with windows 10 you don't need to use any 3rd party programs. Just use MS Create Media tool to make installation media to install or reinstall windows.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Follow the directions carefully and make sure to select the download for the same version of windows that matches the one you have now that is activated.

Hi Everyone.

Had this same issue of the ISO file failing at the extraction stage of creation.

The problem seems to be the presence of file in the ISO root directory.

My solution to creating the bootable recovery USB was to>

Locate the ISO download which is in a hidden system folder.

This will require you to enter the Windows options and check the option to

My path was > Local Disk (C:) > ProgramData > Dell > OS Recovery Tools > Downloads > W1234567_W10x64ROW_pro.iso

I downloaded and used these free programs to >

Extract the files from the Dell ISO with http://www.isoopener.com/

Use Windows to open the extracted folder and delete file

Repack the ISO files into a new ISO using http://www.freeisocreator.com/

Finally use bootable USB creator https://rufus.ie/

Done

Rufus would fail at the extraction stage every time until I used the newly packed ISO file with the file removed.

I rarely reply to these forums unless the solution takes me too many hours to locate an answer and resolve.
I used 3 different PC's, 16Gb and 32Gb USB drives, and repeat downloads.

Hi again,

Forget all that stuff I suggested above.

On reflection I wondered why was a problem.

An online search revealed that Anti-virus programs block the creation of script type files that can lead to virus and malware activity.

I have Trend Micro Antivirus on all our home computers which is why the USB ISO creation failed on them when the ISO extraction tried to write the file onto the root folder of the USB device.

Turned off Trend Micro and was able to successfully run Dell's OS Recovery process from start to finish.

Job done, easy.

I had the same issue and I tried everything I found on the web. It didn't work except your approach. I have microtrend virus protection in my computer and I think it preemptively tried to delete some files that were downloaded for the recovery USB. Once, I turned off the anti-virus protection, I was able to download and create the recovery USB in a single trial. Thanks for your help.
