Optiplex 745 SFF, upgrades

Hello, this is my first time asking a question on dell.com so if this is in the wrong place please let me know, anyways

I have a Dell Optiplex 745 SFF with 275w power supply, one 80GB harddrive (I will upgrade to 1TB), with 7GB ram (3X2GB DDR2, 1X1GB DDR2) Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13Ghz, R5 240 1GB low profile Graphics Card (50w), and I unplugged the cd drive so that it will waste less watts. I wanted to upgrade the Processor to a Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66Ghz but ever since I added the graphics card I was worried that there wouldnt be enough watts to handle the Q6700, I did read some posts that said when you go over your watt limit it may cause the power supply to burn and stop working, can anyone tell me if it will be ok to replace my Core 2 Duo E6400 with Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66, and please keep in mind that I have an R5 240 in the pc. If it wont work then should I get a Core 2 Duo E6700 instead.

Thank You for ANY help

speedstep please take a look at this ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hK-UnC5080hOAb8q5Y8jY4fq5RAXN-Z8/view ) I went to http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ and put in all my computer specs and it said load wattage: 307 watts, I put, instead of R5 240 R7 250 because im planning on buying one, its only a 65 watt card the R5 is 50 watt, (or I might buy an R7 240 2GB 30w, it uses less watts than the R5 240 and the R7 250) so just 15 more watts, and I put in the Core 2 Quad Q6700 as the processor because im planning on buying one too, I know it might not work but im going to take the risk + I disconnected the CD drive to save more watts, I dont use it anyways, but speedstep the website said that the load wattage is 307 watts, is that accurate, I only have 275w. Thanks

The OEM DELL card PN 0F9P1R likely works fine and it says that it does on the DELL website.  However other vendors Like Sapphire,  Power color etc not only do not work they will tell you they only work with UEFI bios systems.

I know about the bios and uefi thing I was aware of that when purchasing the R5 240, but do you know if 275 watts is enough to power the Core 2 Quad Q6700 with the R5 240 I HAVE to upgrade to a quad, my Core 2 Duo E6400 is bottlenecking my R5 240, games are laggy, not because of the GPU but because of the CPU, I know this because I played Left 4 Dead 2 and I opened task manager and speccy in the background, I played for 20 minutes then went to see task manager and speccy, the CPU: usage 90-100% Temp: 140-150 Farenheight, GPU: 110 Farenheight, its like this in almost all games I play so if the cpu is working as best as it can and it lags, clearly I need to upgrade CPU. If your not sure how much watts they use then its ok but if you know please tell me. Thank You

Speedstep off means cpu runs at full speed all the time.

Speedstep ON means lower processor frequency to save power.

So No this should not be ON.

Hi! I just connected to the site, you may have already solved the problem of the 745 since then, well, I have 3 such machines and I love them, they all work perfectly to this day, I can illustrate the Benchmark with a photo! The components: CPU-Q6700, RAM-4x2GHz/800 DDR2, GPU: GTX750 2gb/128bit, power supply: factory... and it plays today's games perfectly, although only with medium performance, but not lagging! 2022-07-31.png
