Optiplex 9020 MT RAM compatibility

Hi guys I want to buy 8gb ram but I am not sure if it´s compatible with my setup. I have Optiplex 9020 MT.

Intel did not certify  future DDR, for your old GEN4 CPu, they did not, nor did DELL nor did any OEM or mobo maker, sorry .  (see 2014 list below) linked.

the key word is certified.

do you know what that means, it means, say CRUCIAL DID the test, and works, on GEN4 CPU.

you have  2 choices buy that or you do the hard work that yourself,  (buy them and try ,wash, wear ,repeat) 

Has nothing to do with brand at all, period.

why not talk Crucial first, ?  dell does  not run QVL labs on old PC, NO THEY DON"T nor do they publish a list.

LIKE THIS LIST  AT ASUS. see the good here? look ! (Asus or Gigabyte and never MSI again)

the above link shows Gen4 CPu DDR support from THEM.  in 2014 and ended there.

update BIOS first did  you?  so it might support more DDR<  this always wise step 1. did you>?

Its not simple or a standard across vendors."  ( some are some not)

So, if I understand, this means one can NEVER know what the density is unless it's micron brand memory.  (for sure never True)

 

We're just taking a shot in the dark with any other brand. Am I correct?

( yes and no, yes if you fail to buy QUALIFIED DDR, )

I believe the highly recommended crucial is actually a micron product, so it would be the only alternative.

DON (the simple answer is newer higher  density DRAM may not work on older PCs) long answer below why.

Simple answer 2 ; is just  buy matched sets OF DDR3 from Crucial.Com ., easy no?

long answer1: (Addressing decode logic is complex)

Do you know what MOORE law is and was.?  how (DRAM topic) the makers make the transistors smaller and small called a die shrink and feature sets,  that makes them faster and denser.  (evolution here is  fasters) if you look.. 

this means the DRAM chips are smaller/faster and more fit  on a DDR stick even front and rear or so dense  only the front is full, if DRAM. (in fact some modern DDR have 4 chips on ONLY one side, so dense are the chips)

note carefully the word density here,  the low density DDR uses (now) high density DRAM. chips.(less)

Note the relativity there !

If you learn  to use a program APP to read the DDR spd chip. you'd see what the stick does.! linked below..

you confuse real data sheets on DDR for useless sales (marketing)ads.  learn that they are NOT THE same.

the 9020mt is intel GEn4 CPU, the INTEL CPU datasheet,(real not marketing bull) is  real. (linked below)

The MMC /IMC and BIOS both limit what can run, the BIOS reads the DDR SPD chip(SPD is PnP data only)

The MMC has logic rules in the CPU  the BIOS reads the SPD and if happy uses what is  in the SPD for max speed and correct voltage.

  the SPD tells the BIOS that this DDR Is dual voltage and BIOS pics, the lower voltage for the GEN4 CPU.  is this simple to under stand? The BIOS sees this DDR can do 2 voltages,  and is super common this fact but CPU can only do 1.3v. (in truth it is a range of voltages)

The MMC inside the CPu is the memory management controller. (or IMC)

now why do we mention density, the reason is (as Intel tells you) is that the newer chips can be too dense now/

and may not run on older CPU. OK> (the ICM can not know future DDR designs,  no crystal ball there)

The SPD data is here. see the data in the SPD, here,  learn where 1.35 is, see Gen4 is DDR3L

see byte 6, bit .0 , 1 and 3,  this IS LAW.  if you learn to read SPD you too learn what the stick can do.

My DDR4 is 1.2v.  (gen7 CPU, my 3020MT shows,  1.35 and 1.5v in Rammon.exe) and IS.

some DDR run hotter with 1.5 on dual voltage DDR, but is spec';d dual.  (even the DRAM maker tells that)

try to know DDR is complex,  for example some GAMING class DDR that are OC, tell you not to run 1.5v or it will overheat, so  DDR3 is in fact sold in may classes, even with heat sinks, and more.

but most Plain Vanilla DDR3 is dual voltage. if your actual read the real data sheet the SPD  and DRAM specs on the STICK you will see the truth.  (forget the simplistic, sales adds, the are mostly useless)

and last your intel gen4 rule off the actual data sheet are clear.

btw at 1.3v (lower)  the transition is faster the voltage goes to Voh,  faster, than at 1.5v old DRAMs.

that is why DDR4 is 1.2v, the chip is faster and so is the lower i/o port voltages faster, (Rise and fall times rules)

NOW Intel WORDS, (SIMPLE)

page 19 shows (THEY SHOW NOW RANK AND DENSITY RULES) NOTE THE WORD X8 !

• Raw Card B – Dual Ranked x8 unbuffered non-ECC
• Standard 1Gb, 2Gb, and 4Gb technologies and addressing are supported for x8
devices. There is no support for memory modules with different technologies or
capacities on opposite sides of the same memory module. If one side of a memory
module is populated, the other side is either identical or empty.

now the chart,  to read and learn what ICM can do. called UDIMM (means desktop in intel parlance)

note the word, change, above, that means Intel can not test the GEN4 CPU on 2020 newer chips.

not invented yet to test.  see? that means YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN or learn to buy DDR from

others that did the test for your,  (Called CERTIFIED DDR)  now you know why.

Top makers of PC mobo give you QVL lists of RAM that work,  not dell, only there sold DDR are supported by dell. (not off the shelf at say bestbuy) QVL = qualified vender list, this case RAM.

IT IS  CLEAR TO ME YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT QUALIFIED DDR MEANS.

it means tested DDR. for your APPLICATION.

if you run from that , you are on your own and is a MOVING target. (as old chips go out of production for  sure)

 

most QVL: list by the best makers of MOBO long ago ended QVL back in 2014, or so. due to the fast advancing nature of the product, and 200+ stick makers,  a huge huge task that, and every 6  months.

learn to buy a set and only from selled that can do returns and exchange to brand #2 of 200..

learn that, please. (even from bestbuy, so no long 2 way shipping to afar)  buy local first. see why?

You are not the first person to buy RAM, then ask the same questions, it's like endless if you google that for the impact of endless. 

Find a friendly vendor and buy your  ram. ok?  vast vendors even down in your town.  (look first)

In the main post there are specs of RAMs which I am using right now to compare.

Vast!  

I do recall seeing ebay listings where seller indicated " For AMD only". These were usually cheaper than other similar modules, so probably were this elcheapo "high density" with less chips per stick.

You would think the part numbers would have a parameter to indicate this parameter. Similar to L for lower voltage, u for unbuffered, etc.

I guess that would not be possible, or too transparent, but at least we don't have to dig or beg for magic info to determine whether a part is DDR  1,2, or 3.

Ram not working means its not dual voltage aka it does not pass speed test at the lower voltage which causes errors.

Voltage requirement is an engineering spec not a war .

Marketing is not an engineering specification.
