Optiplex 990 (Review)

Good day to all.

Dell Optiplex 990

Intel i7-2600

W7 Pro 64bit

4GB Memory

250GB SATA

10 USB ports

I use 13 units Monday thru Friday 10 hours a day for the past 5+ years.

Not one has had a single failure.

I can DOD wipe and test 100+ drives at a time.

They have been a true workhorse and I would recommend them to anyone.

What a great investment and we will be using them for many years to come!!!

Best regards,

U2

My Optiplex GX620 Towers  from 2006 and all its brothers and sisters are still running. They have all been upgraded to 4 gigs ram (Max)

and windows 10.

Earlier Models like GX260 and older are AGP and 2 Gigs max ram or less so they have been retired.

Drives need to be replaced after a while as do Power supplies.

Ram and Video cards very rarely die.  If you get passive units that do not have GPU fan they almost never die.

@speedstep

We upgraded our GX260's to IBM P4's then the Optiplex 990's

Looking back we started with  Compaq DeskPro PIII then Gx260's then IBM P4's and know the 990's!!!

The GX260 used MHDD by Dmitry Postrigen to erase and test our HDD's.

But it was a one drive per unit test.

So after the IBM P4 upgrade we invested in the 990's and started using Sentinel and Kill Disk instead of MHDD.

I loved the old HDD test room.

990 MINI TOWERS can use standard power supply.

Current available working model is EVGA 700BR.

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-BRONZE-Warranty-Tester-100-B1-0700-K1/dp/B018JYHBE6

It should also be noted that the B1 version is fine.

HOWEVER the B2 BT B3 BQ N1 W1 versions FROM THE SAME VENDOR are not ok and DO NOT WORK.

DELL power supplies provide 3AMPS or more on 5VSB rail as well as 150W combined on 3.3V /5V Rails.   These rails cannot be ignored .

POWER supplies with 90 to 130W of power combined on the rails DO NOT WORK.
