Ram upgrade for 7020SFF

I need to upgrade RAM on my OptiPlex 7020 SFF, but can’t find clear information on which RAM, 1.35V or 1.5V, compatible for this model.

Dell site states that “DDR3 and DDR3L are socket compatible, however, It is NOT compatible with systems using 4th Generation Intel (Haswell) processors, which exclusively support 1.35V operation for memory.” 7020SFF is built with Haswell  i5-4590 CPU, thus requires DDR3L according to the statement.

However, when ordering RAM for 7020SFF on Dell website, 1.5V (not 1.35V) Dell Part# A6994446 comes up as replacement, which contradicts previous statement.

On Dell site, there is another statement that OptiPlex 7020 (MT & SFF) compatible with 1600MHz (DDR3 / DDR3L Non ECC).”

So, is it ok to use DDR3 1.5V for OptiPlex 7020SFF? Which one is preferable DDR3L 1.35V or DDR3 1.5V?

Hi @Brandon2000 ,

I believe you read this KB - What is DDR3L memory regarding the statement "which exclusively support 1.35V operation for memory". Look carefully that this KB refer to SoDIMM only, i.e. memory for notebooks and laptops.

Check out page #18 of Desktop 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family Datasheet:

"...DDR3/DDR3L I/O Voltage of 1.5 V for Desktop"

When referring to page #52 of 7020 SFF Owner's manual, supported memory type as DDR3.

Then refer to what Crucial is selling, both DDR3 and DDR3L supported:

Furthermore, check out OptiPlex 7020 Builds from Userbenchmark. Builds with Core i7-4790 + DDR3 DIMM all over the world. Therefore don't worry, your 7020 SFF should be fine with both DDR3 and DDR3L.

For your second question about which one is better, wiki shows their differences of voltage compatibility only. Nothing related with performance or life time.

The Memory that Dell OptiPlex 7020 SFF Supports:

Type: DDR3
Speed: 1600MHz
Connectors: four DIMM slots
Capacity: 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB
Minimum Memory: 2 GB
Maximum memory: 16 GB

The Intel 4th generation desktop processors supports: DDR3-1333/1600, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.5V Memory Type.

Thank you for clarification.

All 7020SFF compatible Crucial DDR3 are specified to be operating on 1.35V not on 1.5V. Look even on images you attached, 1.35v on DDR3 and DDR3L. Are any benefits to offering 1.35V Ram?

When I cited Dell voltage specs compatibility, I didn’t use KB on DDR3L SoDIMM. It was from “Dell OptiPlex Memory Compatibility Guide” https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln152123/dell-optiplex-memory-compatibility-guide?lang=en

Interestingly, while OptiPlex 3040SFF, 5040SFF, 7040SFF are all supposed work with DDR3L-1600 and DDR4-2133 RAM per Intel 6th generation Core CPU specs, Dell lists 7040SFF to be compatible only with DDR4-2133 while  3040SFF, 5040SFF to be compatible with DDR3L-1600.

so ... can 1.5v Memory RAM be used in this model?

Or does it have to be 1.35v?
