Dell R720 power supply firmware issue
I was using the Lifecycle controller to upgrade my VMWare ESXi host. After the firmware was installed, my server was turned off, and I thought something was wrong, so I disconnected the power cable to see if it would come on again. Unfortunately, it was in the midst of applying a firmware upgrade to one of my 750W power supplies, and now iDRAC reports that it has a configuration error, and is currently offline with a blinking amber light.
I tried re-running LCC, to see if it would try to configure PS1 again, but it did not. Any suggestions on how I can get my power supply online again?
Firmware on PS1 (offline) - F0.00.9B
Firmware on PS2 (online) - 69.45.9B. Part# 06W2PWA00

Well, something good happened. We had a second R720, and a co-worker suggested that I swap power supplies. So I put a good power supply in the bay where the bad one was housed, and I put the bad one in the good power supply bay. When I did this, the PSU0006 message on the LCD of the original R720 went away, and it moved to the second R720. When I put the power supplies back to the original location, the PSU0006 error message went away on both R720s. I rebooted the R720 that had the "bad" power supply, and it came up to the lifecycle controller, ready to redo firmware upgrades on both power supplies.
I pointed the LCC to the file that Josh Cr. suggested, and it appeared to apply it (6B.47.9B). However, upon rebooting, it went back to the original firmware (69.45.9B). I don't know why. But at least I have both power supplies back online.
The LCC log output is in the following note. Any clues as to why the newer firmware didn't install?

Hi,
Try manually running the update again from the lifecycle controller. Use the Windows version. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=GPWR2

the lifecycle controller uses the windows package, regardless of what OS is actually installed.

I found this information on another forum.
Documenting it for any future users: Unfortunately when the server was off it was doing a firmware update on the PSU in question, the idrac update has critical PSU updates coupled in and does an awful job of telling you what it’s doing.
Unfortunately this PSU will not be recoverable and your saving grace is that the other one didn’t get updated, I’ve seen 3 servers bricked in this way so far unfortunately, it’s mostly R620’s but seems to be affecting R720’s now.
If you replace the PSU you should be fine, when it takes both PSU’s out it actually causes a complete failure of the power distribution in the board too so believe it or not you’ve got away with this one!

Josh,
I just saw this. So, would I download the GnuP or Red Hat Linux update package to run the update from VMWare? I am used to running the lifecycle controller upon bootup, not in reference to an operating system. Could I download this file, and tell the LCC to use it for updates?
