Hi,

The PowerEdge 600 SC was shipped in 2 motherboard / processor configurations, a 400MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) and a 533MHz FSB.

400MHz FSB - 6R040 - motherboard / tray assembly

533MHz FSB - J3717 - motherboard / tray assembly

Doers this mean they are the exact same motherboard, but with different configuration, and there would be no problem plopping a 2.4 processor in a motherboard that shipped with a 1.8 processor (Note: Processors are both from DELL 600SC PowerEdge.)

Thanks

Hi,

I am sorry, I did not explain the differences. The change in configuration involved the processor Front Side Bus (FSB) speed. The newer 533MHz FSB motherboards are backward compatible with the older 400MHz FSB processors. However if you have the 400MHz FSB motherboard, you must use 400MHz FSB processors.

We shipped 1.8 and 2.4Ghz (400MHz FSB) processors on the 400MHz FSB motherboard.

On the new motherboard we shipped processors starting at 1.8GHz and going up through 3.06GHz in speed.

Note: the 3.06GHz 533MHz FSB processor is the only one which supports Hyper-Threading.

Thanks
Mark

Mark, Is the J3717 motherboard a Standard ATX form motherboard? What im trying to do is move the components of this server into a rackmountable case. The case i have has been defaced and I have decided to move everything into a rackmountable enclosure. Is there any other considerations i should be aware of other than it's size/form factor?  What about Power supply? Do these motherboards take a standard power supply connector?

Thanks for any help. We love Dell!

Hi,

I do not know if the PowerEdge 600SC motherboard is standard ATX (probably not). I just dont have any information on modifying the intended use of Dell systems. There are several issues which can come into play, heat and airflow are the 2 most important.
