2.5" HDs in PowerEdge R210 II with 3.5" HDs

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge R210 II server with a cabled 3.5" hard drive and I would like replace it with four 2.5" cabled hard drives. In the server I have four SATA ports with cables but I don't have internal hard disk cages (brackets) for blocking HDs with 2.5" form factor. It's possible to buy only correct cages? On the Dell site I found part number 400-18495, with four units of this cage, can I install the 2.5" hard drives? The 2.5" cages must be mounted inside the 3.5" cages?

Thanks.

Hi, the cage that you are talking about can only be purchased at point of sale, I have had a look and we don't sell the part as an upgrade.  Its possible that some of the internal parts or chassis are shaped differently to accommodate the 2.5" and 3.5" cages.  I found the following info from the technical guide on the support site -

i.dell.com/.../r-210-2-technical-guide.pdf

12.1 Overview

The PowerEdge R210 II supports the following hard drive configurations:

 2 x 3.5" cabled SATA drives using the motherboard SATA connector

 2 x 3.5" cabled SAS, nearline SAS, or SATA drives using an add-on storage controller

 4 x 2.5" SSD or SAS drives using an add-on storage controller (available Q2 2011)

The hard-drive configuration must be selected at point of purchase and is not an upgrade option.

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions let me know.

Steve

Hi I know this thread is old but I thought I would answer it based on my own experience. The PowerEdge R210 II 3.5 Inch and 2.5" chassis are the same. All you need is the right drive trays to convert it. To covnert you need 1x 0G03H1 / G03H1 ASSY,CAGE,HDD,LF,2.5X2,R210II and 1x 0NK76R / NK76R ASSY,CAGE,HDD,RT,2.5X2,R210II. You can also convert a PowerEdge R220 using these same trays. I have both the R210 II and the R220 so I have verified that the trays fit, they are the same chassis. Not sure what controler you have (if any) but you will need a breakout cable for your SAS controller which you can also find on the net.

Hi, unfortunately there is no option to change from 3.5" to 2.5" drives/cages for the PowerEdge R210 after point of sale.  This has to be decided at the point of purchase.  The system only supports two x 2.5"/ 3.5" cabled SATA or SSD from motherboard SATA connector, or two x 2.5"/ 3.5" cabled SAS, SSD, or SATA via add-on storage controller.

Maybe Steve can elaborate on this, but I believe what you need is a hybrid carrier ... a 3.5" tray that will hold a 2.5" drive - a type of adapter is probably key here.  I do not have one to look at, so I can't answer this directly with any degree of accuracy.

Thanks for your reply....so isn't there another solution? My motherboard (R210 II) have 4 SATA connectors, the problem is just blocking 2.5" hard drives into the 3.5" cages....there is a problem of incompatibility between hooks on the chassis and 2.5 cages? In the hardware manual I read this note: "A 2.5-inch hard drive is encased in a 2.5-inch hard-drive bracket which is further encased in a 3.5-inch hard-drive bracket." what do means?
Which type of cages are used to install two 2.5" hard drives?

Thanks.

Thanks for the update on this post! It was very helpful information. Did you find a source for these drive cages?

No still searching. Dell said they no longer sell these replacement parts. If you find somewhere that sells them, please post here. Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks again for the reply! I did find these guys, hardwarespares.com, but they only had one of them. I watched a youtube video for an R210 (non II) SSD upgrade where the guy basically just left jury-rigged the drives inside the existing 3.5" cages www.youtube.com/watch you tried that? We're just a small shop here so and it's an old machine so I think I'm just going to try that.

Thanks,

Lawrence
