Dell Poweredge 840 RAID 1

Hi,

I have an older server, a Dell Poweredge 840 (running Windows 2003 SBS) that has 1 1TB SATA harddrive in it. I am wanting to setup a RAID 1 array, but am not completely sure how to go about doing this. As far as I realized, the motherboard does not come with an integrated RAID controller. I have a PCI SATA RAID card that does have drivers supporting Server 2003, but I cannot figure out how to make the server boot up through the PCI SATA card..

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I havent done this before

Thanks

While it is possible that code was added in one of the BIOS updates allowing BIOS to more efficiently and effectively detect, identify, and manage hardware, "specific" support of a third-party RAID controller would not have been added.

According to the release notes, this is what the BIOS updates include:

System:         Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) 840
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Version:        A08
Release Date:   06/24/2009
* Support PERC6i and SAS6iR Cards.
System:         Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) 840
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Version:        A07
Release Date:   06/04/2009

* Support PERC6i and SAS6iR Cards.

System:         Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) 840
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Version:        A06
Release Date:   08/19/2008
* Update Intel(R) Microcode for Conroe M-0/G-0 stepping & Celeron CPU.
* Update ATI VBIOS.
Version:        A05
Release Date:   10/04/2007
* Microcode for Intel(R) E21x0 E4x00 M0 stepping microcode added.
* Microsoft (R) Windows Server(R) 2008 Support
Nothing that would appear - to me - to help your situation, but you it can't hurt to try.
Which model RAID card is in it?  A Dell card (PERC 5/6 or SAS 5/6) or a third-party card?
Well, good luck.  You can try booting to the BIOS Setup F2, Boot Sequence to see if it is listed there.  If so, then you will need to move it up in the order.
You likely won't be able to "move" your existing SBS installation to it without reinstalling or restore/backup using a utility capable of restoring to a different controller.
Unless the BIOS recognizes the device and determines that it is a "bootable" device, you won't be able to.  I might check with the manufacturer's Support or Forums for advice/help.
The only options under boot sequence are
1.) ide cd-rom device
2.) hard drive c:
3.) embedded mba v8.3.9 slot 0400
I just booted it up, and I noticed that the BIOS version is A04, so I went online and checked and it seems that the latest version is A08. Are there any new features etc in A08 that A04 would not have/any big differences?
