Expanding RAID 10 on Dell R730 with Perc h730P

Hello all,

We are attempting to expand a RAID 10 array on a Dell R730 rack server with a Perc h730P controller. We currently have 6, 600GB SAS drives in the RAID 10 array. When he click on the drives to perform an action it really gives us only Assign Global Hot Spare. There is no option to "Reconfigure task" on the virtual drive to increase the array to include the 2 new drives. I am unsure how to proceed. This is a recently purchased server in the last year. We are using OpenMange Server Administrator to try and perform this. Reading through some of the forums it appears that we should see a "Reconfigure Tasks" on the virtual drive pull-down but we do not.

Thanks

You cannot reconfigure a nested RAID array (RAID 10, 50, and 60).

You would need to backup, create new array, restore.

You CAN (now) expand a RAID 10 array!

So . . . I know this topic has been here for a while but it appears something has changed and now you can expand a RAID 10 array on a Perc h730 controller per Dell.

I was looking to add 4 more hard drives to my existing RAID 10 array (of 4 drives) and noticed the reconfigure option was available and it looked like it would work (it let me select the disks).  I called Dell support and they said that it would work and sent me this link (see page 30): http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/poweredge-rc-h730p_user's%20guide_en-us.pdf

I am running: PowerEdge R730 w/ Perc H730p mini, Openmanage 8.3.0, Perc firmware 25.4.1.0004.

I hope this helps someone else who's been looking to expand their RAID 10 array.

Hi,

sadly for me there is no option like expand or rebuild :( willing to add 2 more HDD (6+2)

I'm running Dell R530 with PERC H730 mini, latest PERC firmware  25.5.4.0006 and latest bios 2.7.1

iDRAC  2.52.52.52

dell

any ideas?

I believe you have to go through the configuration at boot-up.  You can't do it through iDRAC while the RAID array is in use.

I believe you need to have the controller selected, not the actual VD.. sounds strange, but I'm fairly positive here. The server does not care if the array is in use or not- and you may experience slightly reduced performance while the job is running.

But why am I here? ....I just wish this could be done on an H700 right now.. I just replaced 6x 120GB kingston SSDs with 1TB 850 EVOs to avoid having to backup and re-image an ESXI host... but here I am, reading forums after there is no option to expand, etc. so I'm chalking it up to "one of those odd nested RAID things" because it is a RAID10.. and I've still got just 333GB usable, I bet I can reboot and create another disk- but I want to get LSI MSM to work because it can usually do more than OMSA on these older controllers.

Confirmed, it must be done from the console.

I have the same RAID controller Running 4 disks in RAID 10 configuration on a 730x with H730P controller

I also am running ESXI 6.0 - will i be able to add the 2 additional disks via BIOS? or can I use OMSA?
Appreciate any guidance on the above

Did you ever get an answer to this? I have a R730 with a PERC H730p mini and four SATA SSDs and needed a performance boost so bought four more drives after seeing the ability to now do an OCE for a RAID 10... however I see none of the options...
