H700 Maximum Disk / LUN Size

I'm looking to construct the largest possible internal RAID6 on an R510 with an H700 1GB.

Is there an established maximum size for a HDD connected to an H700? I know the 4TB disks are supported, but what about 6TB or 8TB?

Also, is there a maximum LUN size? The H700 manual mentions nothing about LUN sizes. I believe the H710 has a max of 64TB.

The other option would be to use the H800 and add external storage. Any known maximums there other than 192 drives?

For anyone wondering, I was able to successfully use 6TB drives with the H700. The drives were recognized without an issue and I constructed a 55TB usable RAID6.

Hi All,

I haven't been able to find any info on this, so I figure i'll post it for someone else. I have a Dell Server with a H700 Controller updated to the latest Firmware: 12.10.7-0001 and I just painfully struggled for a few days getting my  Seagate 8TB Drives (ST8000NM0075) to work... and they simply are not seen by the Raid Controller. I today confirmed with a dell tech that the H700 will not support 8TB drives.. So... I'm sending them back and i'll try the ST6000NM0034 drives. Thanks Will5483!

Do not know, but if your considering large disks have you considered....

How long initialization will take

How long a rebuild will take

If you use large disk, the possibility of disks failing during a rebuild goes up

I know that rebuilds will take a while, but I'm planning on using RAID6 to lessen the chance of failure (would require 3 drives to fail for data loss, pretty unlikely). Also, this is backup data, not production.

What specific drives did you use (model/maker)?

Are you running multiple concurrent VMs on these drives?  Or just data storage?

ST6000NM0034

These drives are being used only for replicated backup data, so I haven't done any performance testing.

I went through the same struggle with whether to buy 8TB or "only" 6TB drives, but couldn't find any information on 8TB compatibility. Thanks for being the guinea pig, but sorry about the result.

Are they 4K or 512e drives? I think more than the raw size, the H700 doesn't support 4K drives - they have to be 512e.

Hey Will5483,

I just received the 6TB Seagate ST6000NM0034 drives and I'm still not see'ing them on my raid controller. Your H700 is it an adapter or integrated? Also I doubt this matters much but what server are you using yours with?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Just to share my config, i got a PERC H700 (inside a R410 server) with the firmware version 12.3.0-0032 and my 4 new hard drives IronWolf 10 TB are seen as 2 TB drives.

After upgrading the firmware to version 12.10.7-0001, they are now fully functionnal and i have create a big RAID 5 array.
