H700 and Crucial M550
Hi,
I have a R910 with a H700 and some new Crucial M550 SSDs.
The controller recognizes the drives as physical disks but marks them as "foreign" in physical disk management. They don't show up under virtual disk management and I can't add them to any virtual disks. I have the newest H700 firmware.
Also the drives are SED capable so it may have something to do with that. If I try to import foreign disks under virtual disk management it says I have to create a key. If I try to do that the box just freezes while trying to make the key.
Thanks

Importing the configuration will "attempt" to import any compatible RAID configuration that exists on the disks. Unless the disks were used previously on a compatible controller and you are trying to import their data for use on this system, you will need to CLEAR the foreign configuration before you can do ANYTHING with the disks. Once cleared, the disks should show as Ready on the Physical Disks screen. They will not show on the Virtual Disks screen until you have configured them in a RAID array.

Hi thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I did try that.
When I try to clear foreign configurations I get an error saying that because I had a SED drive that I need to do an Instant Secure Erase. When I try to do that under the physical disk settings I get an error code "0x32" saying that it cannot erase the disk.

I know little about the SED functions of the controller/drives, so may need to wait to see if the Dell guys have some insight for you. Good luck.

I should also note that on boot that the H700 gets stuck at "F/W Initializing Devices 100%" if I boot the box with the M550(s) connected.
The only way I can even get past that point is to hook the drives up once I get into the RAID controller BIOS configuration.

Any thoughts from someone at Dell?

I am facing the same issue and hoping someone has feedback?
At this point I'm about ready to send the drive back.
I'm about to start looking into which drives are supported and go that route.

Hi I ended up just sending the drives back - no one at crucial seemed too interested in resolving the issue either.

Hey there,
i had a similar problem. It least i wanted to use large SSDD (1TB each) on a H700. I just bought 2 of Samsungs brand new PM853T Series, in Germany they cost about 600 € for 1TB.
They run without any problems and they are especially for DataCenter purposes.
Maybe this helps you.

Im also am having a similar issue, I know someone at dell may say that the SED drives require a perc model that can use Encrypting Drives. But the thing about these drives are that its not encrypted by default you can use these drives without enabling encryption.
why cant we just use these drives without taking advantage of the encryption feature, when I plug these drives to an lsi card or go from one MB to another, they pickup fine. My thought is as soon as the PERC detects that the encrypting option even exists it just refuses to go forward by design so dell can sell us the pricier model. I'm just guessing.
in our case we are shelling out for the 710 model. but we still don't want to use the encrypting feature. I would like to hear from Dell person to get more info on this issue.

We also have trouble on dell r610,710 with H700 controller and M550 SSD. Previous Crucial M500 works fine with PERC H700. Also we have tested M550 on R620,R720 servers and it working fine.

Hello
From information posted in this thread, it looks like Generation 11 PowerEdge Systems are not compatible with the M550 SSD drives and H700 controller, but Generation 12 servers do work with this drive model.
(Middle digit of your PowerEdge model number refers to the generation: 0 for Generation 10, 1 for Generation 11, 12 for Generation 12 - ie R610 - 10th Generation)
I will do further investigation and will reply with my findings.
Thank you for your patience
Carlos

Hi,
Thanks - I really appreciate the response. I am also fairly sure an M500 works ok with an R610, so I suspect the problem with the M550 and the H700 controller is to do with it not recognising the encryption features of the M550 which I don't think the M500 had. Given that the controller prompts me to enter a security key (and then hangs) this would seem likely. We'd rather not return our M550 drives as they are better drives.

I have tested M550 SSD on R620 with PERC H310 Mini and i have surprised seeing "Foreign" in controller setup. After updating to latests firmware H310m i have see that now i can use this drives. So I'm suppose that this is software bug on H700 controller that does not have new firmware.

Dear Customer,
As of this time, the Crucial M500 / M550 are not supported.
The drives mentioned in this post fall under the line of Client Class vs Enterprise Class. When choosing SSD drives for Production environments, please consider endurance / workloads (please see White Papers below).
With that said, I have forwarded your feedback / interest of using Client Class SSD drives on PowerEdge Servers to Dell teams for consideration.
