Looking to replace PERC H700 controller in our R710 with a more reliable controller

We've had 2 instances of the H700 controller switch to write-through mode without warning and it seems related to the battery. We'd like to explore the option of swapping out the H700 controller with one that doesn't rely on a battery for caching data.

Does the newer H710 controller fit the bill and is it compatible with the R710 server? If not, what are our options?

Here are the events leading to write policy change (not related to learning cycle because we've disabled auto learn) -

Feb  9 02:54:53 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2188  The controller write policy has been changed to Write Through.:  Battery 0 Controller 0
Feb 27 06:54:33 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2188  The controller write policy has been changed to Write Through.:  Battery 0 Controller 0

Its possible we could solve the above problem by replacing the battery but we'd rather avoid having this happen to us without warning a few years from now.

Andy318,

Before jumping to replacing the controller. Would you verify the driver and firmware version on the H700. If the controller gets really out of date it can cause issues and false errors.

If you do need to replace you can upgrade to the H800 (part number 341-9871)

Let me know what you find.

Hi johnwever

The versions on your server are out of date.

Probably you may try to update the firmware and driver and see how it goes.

H700 firmware - 12.10.4-001, A10

www.dell.com/.../poweredge-r710

H700 driver - 4.31.1.32, A02

www.dell.com/.../poweredge-r710

Do backup your data before updating the firmware and driver please.
