PE2950 unexpected sense - VD re-created,OS re-installed

Hi all,

I have 2 Dell PE2950, one works fine, the other has constantly failed for the Virtual Disk consistency check, "unexpected sense".

The log also referred to a punctured raid

As per dell support instructions I deleted the VD and re-installed OS.

I no longer have the punctured raid error but I still have consistency check fail, unexpected sense on all 3 pgysical drivers.

I have installed the latest open manage server administrator, but still the same issue.

I read that different types of HD firmware can cause this issue but latest open manage SHOULD have fixed this ?

If I run Diagnostics, disk self test, on the good server, all drives pass.

If I run Diagnostics, disk self test, on faulty server, only disk 1 passes , disk 0,2,3 fail for (Device is Busy)

From looking at the logs, you still have issues with the array, with Double media errors on PD1 and PD2.   To clear this from the array,  backup your data,  then delete the array.   Create a dissimilar  array; a large RAID 0 from all the drives will work for this and initialize it. Without this step, the metadata is not cleared and the punctures will still exist.     Delete this array, create your new RAID 5, initialize and run a consistency check from the Ctrl R bios.   Then run diagnostics on the drives again prior to reloading the OS and restoring your data.   You may still need to replace the drives.

OpenManage is a reporting and management tool only and doesn't update your server.  It will give you the information needed to update your server's firmware and bios.

Hiya, and thx for the reply , you say "Then run diagnostics on the drives again prior to reloading the OS and restoring your data",  what diagnostics do I run? Obviously a bootable CD ?

Here is a link to download our 32 bit diagnostics package:

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/diags/DELL_32-BIT-DIAGNOSTICS_5118-3_R212797.exe

Install this on your PC, a small program is installed on the desktop.  With this, you can create a bootable floppy, CD or USB key to run the the 32 bit diagnostics.

Thx Geoff,

your process of creating a dissimilar array (RAID 0) to clear the metadata worked !!

For anyone else that may have this issue I did the following.

Created Ghost winpe boot disc with PERC Drivers

Took a ghost image of server

Restarted the server then CTRL R for RAID config

Deleted current virtual disc

Created a new VD (RAID0)

Start INIT (Not fast Init)

Deleted VD (RAID0)

Created a new VD (RAID5)

Start INIT (Not fast init)

Run consistency check from CTRL R Bios

Rebooted using DELL Diagnostics CD

Tested all Drives – PASS

Restored Ghost image of server

Ran consistancy check from DELL server manager

Unexpected sense error no longer occurs !!!
