PowerEdge R430 S130 to H730?

I have two PowerEdge R430s - both have embedded SATA and the S130 Controller with 4x SATA drives in RAID10.

I would like to transition to the H730 Controller, but have heard this is not possible - since I have an Embedded SATA Chassis.

Am I stuck with two boat anchors - or is there a path forward?

Hello

Yes, it is possible. Upgrading from the S130 to a hardware RAID controller like the H730 is not supported. We don't have a process or kit that you can purchase for that upgrade. That does not mean it is impossible.

If you order an H730 kit you will not receive all of the parts necessary for it to function. You will need to purchase additional parts like cables. The upgrade kits assume that you already have a hardware RAID controller installed, so you have the necessary cables in place already.

We do not have these cables available for purchase via normal sales channels. They are only available as warranty replacement. We sell warranty replacement items for out of warranty customers through our spare parts department. You may be able to purchase the necessary cables through spare parts or a reseller.

Thanks

You should be able to use either of these cables:

ND4YM

7NKWC

Thanks

The backplane supports SAS and SATA, but the S130 does not support SAS. If you are installing an H730 controller you can use SAS.

Can you please inform me of the cables or other items I will need in addition to the H730 kits?

I  have an available expansion slot in each R430.

What is the part number of the controller you are purchasing, and which backplane do you have?

0MG81C is the backplane.

I'm looking at the H730 (mini mono?) controller kit (Dell Part # 405-AAEJ) - spec sheet states it is compatible with the PowerEdge R430.

Last question...

I'm going to move the 4 SATA (Constellation.2) drives from one R430 to the other R430 (to create one RAID10 and two RAID1 - transaction logs & backup) and then refill the initial server with 8 SAS drives.

Is that feasible with the 0MG81C backplane?
