R320, R420 and R520 Server with PERC H310 Hard Drive questions
Hello,
we are planing to by more Dell G12 (R320, R420 and R520) Servers, all with the PERC H310
Is the PERC H310 only accepting Harddrives from Dell, or can we use our own drives?
We already have a lot of 7k2 SATA (HGST and Western Digital) Drives on stock, so i does not make sense to order Dell Server with Harddrives for us.
I can't find any information if we can use our own drives or if we have to use Dell branded drives.
Thanks!

One thing I wanted to add for anyone that happens to run across this post in reference to our other equipment. My above statement is in relation to our servers. It is my understanding that our PowerVault storage appliances require Dell drives and will not work with non-certified drives.
Thanks

Hello jay2k
None of our servers require Dell drives. When we released the H700 controller the original firmware would not accept non-Dell drives, but we removed that limitation in a later firmware update. You may receive communication errors and non-certified drive warnings, but the drives will likely work. If they do not work then it is not because we intentionally designed non-Dell drives to not work, it would just be a firmware incompatibility issue with the controller.
There is not a way to disable non-certified drive errors, so if you do receive these errors you will get a flashing amber light on each drive and a degraded status on the backplane and possibly the array. So, there will be some annoyances of not using our drives, but they will typically work.
Thanks
