R740XD with PERC H740p unable to create RAID 5

Hi Dell Team,

We're trying to configure our Dell R740XD with the PERCH740p mini with a RAID 5.

PERC H740P Mini (Incorporado)  Firmware : 51.16.0-4076  Controller Version: 7.705.08.00  Cache :8192 MB

We got 3 disk ready for setup a RAID 5 and the controller just give us the option for RAID 0 or RAID 1, RAID 5 is greyed.

As far as we remember RAID 5 minimal disk setup is 3 disk no? We fully updated all the firmware of the full chassis and right now we're stuck on it.

Any ideas? We can try the avago raid tool but we wanna support from Dell.

Regards

Hi,

Are the drives from Dell? Is the drive firmware up to date? Can you try creating it from the BIOS? Let us know if that doesn’t resolve it.

What OS do you have installed? The MegaRAID storage tool is one I've only seen used on a non-server OS.

Hi,

Drives are not from Dell, they're HGST 18TB SAS Enterprise. Yes, RAID Controller is updated.

Ctrl+R doesn't appear in this controller, but within the BIOS shows the same as the images.

Also tryed ussing Dell Server Administrator and MegaRAID storage ... Anything else im missing, why this not supporting other RAID levels than 0/1/10?

I think the best thing you could do is export the PERC log and see if the controller is complaining about any of the 3 drives. The H740P can absolutely support a RAID 5 volume, so I'd start there. The SEL in the iDRAC or the Lifecycle Log may have pertinent data as well, but the PERC log should be the best one. If you're not seeing anything within those logs, you may be best served contacting support, so as to have someone look at the system with you.

Hi DylanJ

We use WS 2019, MegaRaid Tool 17.X works and is able to manage the Dell PERC , we use it as a secondary monitoring method to see detailed logs of the controller for example.

Hi

Looks like you cant change with VD created ... Can anyone confirm if, unplugging disk , change to RAID mode and importing VD will work?

Hi Team,

Looking extra documentation looks like the PERC H740 comes with the enchaned mode enabled that only support R0/R1/R10. Thats explain all.

How to disable via perccli?

It should work fine, but we have not tested it, but maybe someone else in the community has.
