Swapping HBA330 with H730P Controllers
Hi
Long story short Dell supplied some 730xd Servers with HBA330 controllers when we ordered and require H730P controllers (for SSD/vSAN).
Of course before we realised we already had VM running on them. Dell are sending us the right controllers which we need to swap.
What will happen when we swap the controller? Will the system just ask us to import the foreign config and we can retain the OS or will it require complete OS rebuild?

Hello.
The HBA330 is not a RAID controller but and internal SAS HBA card which does not support RAID and as such will not posses any RAID information. Therefore, there will not be any foreign configuration to import. The option available is to backup existing data, install the H730 card, create Virtual Disks as necessary; re-install the OS and restore data from backup.

If you are using the PERC H330's pass-though option, the PERC H730 supports this too.
So you should be able to turn on the passthrough option for all disks (and SSDs) and then boot ESXi (from the dual SD card I assume), and it should work fine.
Note that you may need to upgrade the firmware on the H730 that you receive, as only recently did VMware certify the LSI/Avago controllers for vSAN 6.2, but only with an updated driver and firmware.

While H730P could be chosen for its RAID capability, it may be better off to retain HBA330.. just in case you are still contemplating...

DellEMC strongly recommends using the HBA330 pass-through controller for vSAN deployments. The HBA330 is specifically designed for Software Defined Storage applications like vSAN, and does not introduce the unnecessary RAID processing overhead involved with the H730 PERC RAID family of controllers.
