Tape Device Not Recognized

I have a poweredge 6650 that I am trying to connect my Adic Scalar 1000 to. The scalar has two Sony SDX-500C tape drives. The problem is that the device is not being recognized by the hardware or software. The scalar has the appropriate LVD cables and the cables are connected to the LVD/SE controller on the Scalar 1000. I am running RedHat 9 with the appropriate SCSI tape stuff compiled into the kernel. When the scalar is connected to channel B, the system boots fine, but the Tape device is not recognized. When the scalar is connected to channel A, the system will not boot and the system says that channel - 0,1 is not responding. The disk is on ID 0, the cdrom is on 6, the library is on 3, sony 1 is on 4, sony 2 is on 5, so there are no conflicts of ID's that I know of. Any help would be appreciated.
