The PERC1 battery has failed. followed by The PERC 1 battery is operating normally.

Hi,

I'm using a Poweredge R720 with a PERC H710p RAID and 16 SAS disks.

Once every few months, I get battery warnings which seem to automatically clear as indicated by the pic:

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 21:16:34 The charge level for the battery on Integrated RAID Controller 1 is below the normal threshold.
Tue, 08 Apr 2014 21:02:27 Write policy on Integrated RAID Controller 1 was changed to Write Through.

The server runs fine, not too sure why this is happening, but I suspect I should replace the battery.

AgentPineapple,

What is the driver and firmware revision for the H710P? If the firmware is far out of date it can cause battery errors to appear.

This is the current firmware version - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/555/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=MRFR5&fileId=3354707217&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=poweredge-r720&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SF

If the controller is current then you can run this diagnostic as well

Let me know.

Hi Chris

I have exactly the same issue with a Dell R720.

H710P firmware is 21.2.0-0007

Perc1 battery has failed, the about a minute later, the Perc1 battery is operating normally.

Otherwise no problems with the server. I was under the impression there was no battery, but rather NV Ram on this controller?

I tried to run the diagnostic but it doesnt run, says failed to discover device

Hi Chris

I've got the same kind of Problems with an Power Edge R520:

This are the notice: Controller Event log: Battery charging was suspenden due to high battery Temperatur: Controller 0 (PERC H710P Mini)

and

Controller Event log: BBU disabled: changing WB virtual disks to WT. Forced WB VDs are not affected: Controller 0 (PERC H710P Mini)

Do we have to replace the battery or can I fix it with a newer Firmware. What is the type of the battery.

Thank you for your Support.

The PERC1 battery has failed." and with it "The PERC1 battery is operating normally." afterwards.

The firmware was already updated to the latest one to begin with. I have updated the firmware again with - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/555/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=MRFR5&fileId=3354707217&o...

but did not resolve the conflict.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi, I think it is normal and part of the "Battery Transparent Learn Cycle". https://www.dell.com/support/article/ph/en/phbsd1/sln292301/dell-perc-controller-learn-cycle-mode?lang=en

"The controller automatically performs the Transparent Learn Cycle (TLC) on the battery to calibrate and gauge its charge capacity once every 90 days."
