Trim/UNMAP on DELL PowerEdge R630 with vSAN

Hello,

may I ask, if TRIM/UNMAP is possible on DELL PowerEdge servers?

I tried to reclaim free space on many Windows 2012+ servers and all servers running on vmware (version 6.0 - 6.7) on vSAN or not. And all tries ended by this message "The operation requested is not supported by the hardware backing the volume"

I am not sure, if it is because of type of HW.

There is setting according to "https://storagehub.vmware.com/t/vsan-space-efficiency-technologies/unmap-trim-space-reclamation-on-vsan-1/"

but the "defrag /L" or "Optimize-Volume  -ReTrim" end by the bolded message above, but the message is not relevant for another servers out of DELL HW. Anyway, for my DELL laptop is the command also working.

Is there some limitation by storage controller, firmware or something?

Thank you

Hi DexterLJ,

as far as I'm aware there is not support for the PERC RAID controller.

Here is an article I found: https://www.dell.com/support/article/qna44096

Even the documentation does not tell it is supported - what I learned in my years with Dell is, if it is not written down it is not there

Regards
Stefan

Hello,

thanks for clarification. So, I guess, that the TRIM is not supported on "Dell HBA330 Mini" controller. There is not possible to choose RAID or HBA mode. So probably this function is also missing for this "raw" controller.

And, I have problem to find some relevant documentation for "PERC FD33xD", there is visible HBA mode, but the TRIP operation failed by the same issue (HW is not support it).

Thank you

Hi,

you find the relevant documentation in the PERC 9 users guide.

As mentioned, the PERCs do not support TRIM.

Cheers
Stefan
