h310 and r720

I have an r720 with h310 controller.  I have a MX3P7 cable plugged into the motherboard and backplane.  I have tried several (DELL) drives and none of them show up in the controller bios.  The server sees the card but the controller doesn't see the drives.  The system recognizes when the drives are inserted/removed (i get an orange light with a warning that a drive was removed when I remove one).

I would be most grateful for any ideas on what I might be doing wrong.  Thanks!

Sorry for the delay Shane.

That is correct, the H310 for the R720 is the Mini mono (part number K09CJ). The HV52W  looks to be the desktop version.

Ntshane,

What is displayed on the top of the controller BIOS, H310 or S110? Curious if the software controller was enabled and you are looking in there. Also, from within the controller BIOS, are you hitting CTRL-N to go to the PD Mgmt screen to see the drives, or are you looking in VD Mgmt?

Let me know what you find.

Chris,

It is definitely going to the H310 controller when I hit CTRL-R at bootup.  Then, when I hit CTRL-N, I get 'No PD present'. I've tried two different known-good SAS drives (Dell drives, a 10k and a 15k).

NTShane,

Got your IM.

Can you follow this link and then on page 101- you will find the cabling directions for the appropriate hdd setup.

http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/poweredge-r720_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf

Verify the cabling matches and let me know.

Thanks Chris,

So, the cabling looks identical.  Sas cables to backplane, and converge to single head cable on motherboard.  My h310 is in the pci slot, not the 'mini' version.  Could this be the problem?  I see some other diagrams where the cables need to be run directly to the card if you are not using the mini version (the non-pci version).

Do you have a part number for the H310 you are using?

I'm starting to wonder if this doesn't work unless you are using the 'mini'/monolithic version of the card.  I'm using the PCI version.  I'm thinking the pci version needs to be cabled directly (not using the port on the motherboard).  Can you confirm?

That's what I needed to know!  Thanks Chris.
