I'm interested in running Microsoft Hyper-V Serrver on my Powerdege 2850 which has 2 each, 2.8Ghz, dual core, Intel SL8MA.
One of the HW requirements specified for Hyper-V is that the processor supports VT-x.
Since the Intel SL8MA does not support VT-x, I would like to know if it is possible to replace the processor with the Intel SL8UB which has the same specs as the SL8MA. The only difference I can see from Intel's spec sheets is the amount of L2 Cache, theMax TDP, and that the SL8UB does support VT-x.
For the SL8MA see: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27202
For the SL8UB see: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SL8UB
Has anybody tried this modification?
Even with the processor change, there isn’t a BIOS update to include the option to enable VT.
Without the BIOS instruction to allow for VT to be enabled to pass thru to the processor, there isn’t a solution to resolve the dependency that arises on install regarding VT enabled system.

In other words; you need a newer server to get VT support (e.g. at least a 2950 (staying in that server model range).
