Dell PowerEdge 2950 II - Unsupported cpu combination System halted

I bought two new processors for my PowerEdge 2950 II and the place get the error below:

Unsupported cpu combination

System halted

The processors are the model Xeon E5440, socket LGA771.

The BIOS version is 2.4.3.

Using my Service Tag on the Dell site is available an update for my BIOS in version 2.7.0.

I wonder if this version really adds support to my processor.

Any risk doing this update?

Thanks,

Rodrigo Ventura.

The 2950 II only supports Xeon 5000, 5100 and 5300 series Xeons. The 5200 and 5400 series are only supported in the 2950 III.

Even updating BIOS to version 2.7.0?

I need processor clocked up to 2.8Ghz, Intel X5365 works on Dell PowerEdge 2950 II?

Thanks.

You MUST have the revision III motherboard with 2.7.0 BIOS for a 5400-series processor.  Period.

The X5365 should work on a revision II with 2.7.0 BIOS.

Ok, last question.

X3363 Xeon works?

E5335 Works?

And E5140 better than E5310?

Thanks for all help.

The Xeon "3" series (letter, then a "3" and then three more numbers) have never been certified or sold in a 2950 as these processors don't support dual processors in a single motherboard. I highly suspect that you will get an unsupported CPU message with no option to do anything other than powering it down and swapping to a Xeon 5-series (and more specifically a 5300-series as you mentioned you have a 2950 II).
