Dell PowerEdge T110 II Add On Video Graphics Card That Works

System configuration:
Dell PowerEdge T110 II
BIOS 2.8.0
RAM 2x8GB

For several reasons (e.g. PCI bus power) it is challenging to install an add-on graphics card in Dell PowerEdge T110 II.  The ATI Radeon HD 5450 is a good choice for the Dell PowerEdge T110 II because if its low (approx. 10W) power consumption.

After trying several HD 5450 graphics cards (listed below), one that works is a "VisionTek Radeon HD 5450 - Graphics card - Radeon HD 5450 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCI Express 2.1 x16".

Edit: Thanks to paikat for following part numbers, (see his posting for links where to buy)...
VisionTek Part# : 900356
Dell Part# : A6173020

This card works when the monitor is connected to VGA/D-SUB/DB15 connector. I did not try connecting to the HDMI or DVI connectors.

After installing this graphics card, the BIOS setup changed from:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Enabled

to saying:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Standard

and allowed to switch from "Standard" to "Distributed" so it now says:
Integrated Devices > Embedded Video Controller: Distributed

Note: Install the card with the monitor connected to the Integrated / On-board video port, change the BIOS settings to Distributed, reboot the computer, and then connect the monitor to the Discrete / Distributed / Add-on video port.

The following are identifiers on the "VisionTek Radeon HD 5450 - Graphics card - Radeon HD 5450 - 2 GB DDR3 - PCI Express 2.1 x16"

54502GBPC
VT 5450 PCIe 2GB V/D/H
VT-400746PC

Ver: 1.0

SH6 94V-0

Here are some pictures of the  DELL VT 5450:

Other video cards that were tested and did NOT work well in the T110 II are:

* XFX AMD Radeon HD 5450 1GB GDDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low-Profile PCI-Express Graphics Card HD545XZQH2;HD-545X-ZQH2
Note there is another version of this card i.e. ONXFX1PLS2 that was not tested.

* JATON Video-PX610GT-EX GeForce GT 610 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

* DELL HIS H545H1G Radeon HD 5450 (Cedar) 1GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16

I hope this may help others avoid frustration when trying to install a video card in a Dell PowerEdge T110 II.

However I order a T20 which i got at a similar price with the E3-1225v3 which has onboard graphics

The PowerEdge T110 II also has onboard graphics, but the onboard graphics is weak and has very little RAM, i.e. Matrox G200eW w/8MB memory.  If I recall this configuration doesn't handle 1080p, and the performance under Unbuntu (which like 3D acceleration) is dismal.

I suggest checking the graphics specs on the T20 to make sure it can handle 1080p and has 3D acceleration built-in.

Better yet might be to get a workstation with an Intel i7, decent graphics card and drop in a used Dell Perc 6I/R (Data cable connector is: sff8484) if you want RAID 0 or RAID 1.

Another consideration is what OS do you plan to use? If it is Windows Server provided by Dell, then you might stick with the T20.

Hey BEYERIII,

I decided to go the T20, I checked and it has a the P4600 graphics controller, which is similarly clocked as the HD4600 graphics on consumer processors.

I also check and found that the T20 supports upto 75watts on its PCIe16x 3.0 slot. Which means I can add any of the low profile cards and also the GTX 750 TI (Which many people have confirmed works with T20).

As for getting a workstation instead, at the price that I bought this (pretty darn good deal), the only other options would be a desktop pc with G-series/i3 processors and no GPU, I even checked how much it would cost to build a pc with an equivalent i5 or Xeon E3 ... and it ended up costing atleast twice as a much including taxes and shipping.

As for what I plan to do with it, I'm planning to put 8-16GB ram in it and possibly add a GTX 750 TI GPU.

My uses: Learning KVM/ESXI and running some linux VMs for my web development on one hardrive.

Use an SSD to run Windows and use as a workstation/Gaming PC.

Why I chose the Xeon server over conventional, it seems Xeons and the C226 Chipset are the perfect compromise, as they provide the same or better performance as a conventional i5, but also support Vt-x and Vt-d to use virtualization software.

Thanks for the info about the T20.

I like the T20 very much, in addition to better graphics support, it also has USB 3.0 ports (afaik T110 II only has USB 2.0)

Yep, the T20 is a better all round machine for the homelab or small office style setup.

The T110 II for the price, might be a better server (since it comes with the Hyperthreaded Xeon), but the processor apart, the T20 is a lot more flexible, uses the 1150 socket, which is newer, supports PCIe 3.0, has USB 3.0 like you mentioned.

It seems the T20 has sold like hot cakes in Europe, cause most of the detailed and useful resources I found were either in German or french.

After the warranty is up, perhaps pull the Xeon E3-1225 and swap it with a Xeon E3-1230 (if the Mobo Chipset and BIOS handles hyper-threading)

Yep, I might consider that if I get a cheap processor on ebay. It wont be worth to buy it new, since the processor alone might end up being as much as the T20 server ;) ..

And I can also confirm that this system (although Dell says it only support Windows server) is able to run Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 the Windows server drivers work.

Hopefully this information might help other potential buyers who might be picking between T110 vs T20

I was looking for the same thing, a gfx card that would work properly on my T110. I tried a GIGABYTE GV-N210SL-1GI, but that seemed to cause sudden unexpected reboots when using remote desktop. So I went on Amazon and got what looked to be an inexpensive alternative to the DELL VT 5450.

On Amazon, it's called the VisionTek Radeon 5450 2GB DDR3 (DVI-I, HDMI, VGA) Graphics Card - 900861.

After powering on, the display just got stuck indefinitely with an underscore on the top left.

Don't be tempted by this low-cost variant on Amazon! It does not pass POST on the T110 II. (Although it did seem to work well on a Dell Optiplex 330)

Numbers on the card--

VT-401479
VT 5450 PCIe 2GB V/D/H
PN 54502GBSM

Here are some pics. The similarity to the DELL VT 5450 is astounding!

Now I'm off to buy the actual DELL VT 5450, hopefully this saves someone the headache I'm having!

Hello Beyeriii,

i read your post and your willingness to help is very appreciated.

i need a suggestion, i have the Dell PowerEdge T110 with windows 10 running.

All i wanted was to hook up a 2nd monitor but i was not successful.

i bought these 3 things but unfortunately was waste of money and time.

VGA PLUG TO 2X VGA SOCKET 30CM LEAD VGA SPLITTER 'Y' ADAPTOR

Simplecom Cm201 Full HD 1080p VGA to HDMI Converter With Audio

ALOGIC 10M Pro Series HDMI Cable, HDMI to HDMI

But it dint work. So all i need now is the 2nd screen to work, it is OK if it is Duplicate or extend, dosent matter. I was wondering do i need to buy a Graphic board or possibly something else, please help. Thanking You

Hello nitrolux!

I am very pleased to hear that you've managed to get a Dell PowerEdge T110 II working with Windows 10!
Afaik this was not really possible...

I have the server now running Windows Small Business Server 2011, but it is not really used anymore. I was planning to have Win 10 installed on it. Also with 2 monitors attached to it. So, it seems we have the same challenge in front of us !

Can you please share how you managed to have Win 10 installed on the server hardware? I can then maybe help to get 2 monitors installed on the server. The way you described to attach a 2nd monitor was not the way I would suggest. First let's see  how we can get this thing going on Win 10!

Looking forward to hear from you!
Thanks a lot!
