Memory upgradation on R710

I confirmed part# 9J5WF is supported by Dell PowerEdge R710. It is a RDIMM memory.

Something to take note, R710 supports RDIMM and UDIMM memories. Make sure your 24GB memories are the same type to RDIMM before ordering part# 9J5WF.

To check what type of memory your server is having, please key in the service tag on the link below and then check System Configuration and Components.

Thanks for the reply. Current Memory type i could see from Dell Open Manage console is DDR3-Registered.

And from Product selecter ( the link you provided) i could see below text

This is means the existing RAM is Registered? and can we go ahead and purchase part# 9J5WF ?

I have come to know from another Dell technical person and he said that this part number RAM will not work. the reason is below, as per his statement

The description of the part number that I gave you “NN876 ” is: DIMM,4G,1333,512X72,8,240,2RX4, 4GB RDIMM, 1333MHz, 2RX4X72, 8K, 240, Regulatory

The description of the part number that the reseller gave you “ 9j5wf ” is: DIMM,4G,1333,2RX8,8,240,REG,LV, 4GB DIMM, 1333MHz, 2RX8, 8K, 240, Regulatory, Low Voltage.  

The difference between them is that one is 2RX4 and the second one is 2RX8 which will not work.

All memory either have to be 2RX8 or 2RX4 but you can’t mix and match.

Please let me know your thoughts.....

Yes, you can't mix them together.

Please email me your service tag, I will check on the part number on your current R710 first and revert.

I've checked your service tag and memory part# is:-

NN876  DIMM,4G,1333,2RX4X72,8,240,REG

It is recommended for you to purchase the same type of memory for the upgrade, therefore part# 9J5WF is not suitable if you are running on Optimizer Mode.

Thanks Manfred for confirming. Just for curios iam asking. If we insert the oter part number RAM what will happen to Server? will not boot? or BSOD?

Sorry for the delay, basically part# 9J5WF x8 memory module is not supported in Optimizer mode only. Most likely it will allows you to boot the server but you may encounter error messages like:-

Unsupported DIMM detected. The following DIMM has been disabled: x

or

Unused memory detected. DIMM’s installed in the following slot are not available when in mirror or 128-bit advanced ECC modes: x,x,x

That said, this part is supported in Memory Mirroring and Advanced ECC mode.
