PowerEdge 2900 - Windows Server 2003 R2
Hi, I have a PowerEdge 2900 - with 2 x 250gb HD's. We have a Dell SAS 6/iR integrated controller - configured to RAID 1.
Just before Christmas, one of our 250gb HD's failed - drive 0. We only received a replacement HD last week as they are very rare to buy. We turned off the Server, and placed in the new HD. It started to sync up.
We came in the next day to find an LED error on the display of the PowerEdge 2900 - E1810 HDD 0 Fault.
This was only a new HD. I need to know if it's possible the Controller could be broken or if we definitely go and buy another HD that, that will work.
They were the exact same HD's too.
Any advise?

What is the driver and firmware version on the controller? Also, what is the OS installed on the server?

Did y'all clear the ESM log after replacing the hard drive?

It's Windows Server 2003 R2 32bit SP2. Driver and firmware version: lsi_sas.sys (1.28.03.01 built by: WinDDK, 94.50 KB (96,768 bytes), 28/05/2009 17:33)
We haven't cleared the ESM log. Hasn't been mentioned till now.

I've cleared the EMS logs and the Hard Drive is now syncing up - will see how it goes and report back. It normally gets to about 30% then crashes. So I'll leave it running over night and report back.

I guess you fixed it since we haven't heard from you. But could you please confirm what you did to fix it for archival purposes?

Hi, Sorry this is still not fixed. We had to swap out the new HD and received another new this afternoon. I tried to rebuild the Raid just there again, and it gets 12% then Fails. would this indicate problems with the controller?
Its a SAS 6/ir Integrated
I checked the logs on the ESM - and saw these from when it was rebuilding:-
There was an unrecoverable disk media error during the rebuild or recovery operation: Physical Disk 0:0:0 Controller 0, Connector 0
This is the second new HD that we have used, so it must be the Controller?

In my opinion, you are looking at a corrupt RAID array rather than a bad controller (your good/remaining disk has an unreadable block(s) that it cannot replicate to the rebuilding drive). Of course, you could replace the controller to see - or if you don't believe me - but you will likely find it will fail again. DOA drives happen, however, having two is very unlikely. Assuming you have the drives in a backplane, you might consider trying a different slot, and/or reseating both ends of the cable (controller and backplane) to ensure a proper connection.
