PowerEdge R510 Memory Upgrade
I have looked through a lot of similar posts but still am unsure of how I should approach this.
We have a PE R510 Single CPU with 3x8GB memory modules. Current Memory Operating Mode is Optimizer.
Current Configuration (according to OMSA):
DIMM_A1: 8GB DDR3
DIMM_A2: 8GB DDR3
DIMM_A3: 8GB DDR3
DIMM_A4: Empty
DIMM_B1: Empty
DIMM_B2: Empty
DIMM_B3: Empty
DIMM_B4: Empty
I have 2x16GB modules on hand and am wondering if it is possible to add these 2 modules to this server to increase available memory. Is it possible and if so what slots would I add them to?
Thanks
Kevin

Hello.
The R510 quite unique in its memory set up. It has 3 channels, CH0, CH1 &CH2 with 4 slots. See diagrammatic illustration below:
The memory must be the same on the same channels and the population of the DIMMs is in the order A1, A2, A3 &A4. Try populating the slots as follows;
A1 &A4 = 16 GB
A2 &A3 = 8GB
See pages 114 - 119 of the users' guide for more information: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r510_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf
Let me know how this works out.

Thanks Robert. That makes sense. It may be a few days before I try it but I will report back with how it went.

Nice to know that you figured it out! See link for more information on Windows Server OS memory limitations: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778(v=vs.85).aspx

Hi Robert,
It did not work, during boot there was a message along the lines of A1, A2, A3 must be the same. Booted into windows fine though. I tried a few different combinations but in the end I realized it was a Windows Server 2008 R2 Std server so it only supports 32GB of memory. Just used the 2 16GB modules in A1 and A4 and that's working fine.
Thanks for your help.
