PowerEdge R715 memory upgrade

Jump to solution

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge R715 server with 2xAMD CPUs and 16x2GB memory. I'd like to add another 32GB of memory but I read something about that the memory lanes must be populated identically. Is it possible to add 2x16, 4x8GB or 8x4GB and have a total of 64GB?

Thank you in advance for your help.

It has to be replaced in pairs, so 4X8GB and 12X2GB should work as well.

The memory in each pair has to match ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r715_Owner%27... page 94

Having 8X4GB and 8X2GB would probably be the best configuration so that the number of each DIMM size matches.

Hello,

Thank you for your fast reply.

Well, I was reading the manual but I just couldn't understand it because my server has 32 slots (not 16 like in the manual) - 8xA, 8xB, 8xC and 8xD DIMM sockets. I don't want to remove the current 16x2GB memory but just want to add more. I want to have a total of 64GB or at least 48GB.

Can I use the sockets C and D or they're only if I had 3rd and 4th CPU?

Thank you again for your help.

You might have an R815 instead of a 715, as it supported 4 processors. However you can only use those empty slots if all 4 processors are in use, each bank of processors is dedicated to a processor.

This is dmidecode output:

System Information
Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Product Name: PowerEdge R715

Strings:
CPU.Socket.1
CPU.Socket.2
CPU.Socket.3
CPU.Socket.4
DIMM.Socket.A1
DIMM.Socket.A2
DIMM.Socket.A3
DIMM.Socket.A4
DIMM.Socket.A5
DIMM.Socket.A6
DIMM.Socket.A7
DIMM.Socket.A8
DIMM.Socket.B1
DIMM.Socket.B2
DIMM.Socket.B3
DIMM.Socket.B4
DIMM.Socket.B5
DIMM.Socket.B6
DIMM.Socket.B7
DIMM.Socket.B8
DIMM.Socket.C1
DIMM.Socket.C2
DIMM.Socket.C3
DIMM.Socket.C4
DIMM.Socket.C5
DIMM.Socket.C6
DIMM.Socket.C7
DIMM.Socket.C8
DIMM.Socket.D1
DIMM.Socket.D2
DIMM.Socket.D3
DIMM.Socket.D4
DIMM.Socket.D5
DIMM.Socket.D6
DIMM.Socket.D7
DIMM.Socket.D8

However, If I replace the 8x2GB with 8x4GB that will increase the memory with only 16GB.

Is there some way to add 24-32GB more memory, by replacing only 4-8 of the current 2GB chips?
