PowerEdge T3210 - Won't Boot + No Video

Jump to solution

Any help or comment is much appreciated.

After an initial boot problem (failed while running live), we diagnosed a bad motherboard and powersupply.  Both tested bad.

Both motherboard and PS replaced.  Still getting errors on the system. The server powers on, then back off only to reveal a blinking amber light (orange when pressing the locator button) on the front panel above the power button.  There is no LED panel or LCD to indicate any errors.  Everything is reconnected as it should be, a clean coat of heatsink grease has been applied.

When powered on, there is No post/no video.  It powers, and then about 15 seconds later the fan powers off and the amber light comes on blinking.  I have verified all connections, and tried this with and without the cover on (thinking it may be the intrusion detection).  Everything has been reseated to verify.  I even checked the CPU socket and RAM slots for bent pins prior to installation.

The system required removal of power to try again.

Any thoughts on what could be failing?  Thanks in advance.

Joshua,

Can you take the server to a Minimum to Post configuration? That is removing everything but the following from the server -

CPU

System Board

Heatsink for CPU for prevention of over-heating

The PSU (and for redundant PSU also the PDB).

Front panel (to power system ON).

1 memory DIMM.

Does the server post under these conditions?

Did you get the Power-on-self-test problem before ou installed a new motherboard and powersupply?

This problem according to literature might also point to a faulty video card or bad memory sticks. Try replacing one memory stick at a time and rebooting the system. If the problem goes away you found the problem!

Thanks to you both for your suggestions.  We tried these and finally Dell agreed to send another new motherboard and PSU, as well as a proc.  So either the board (marked refurb!!!) was DOA, or the proc was damaged too.
