PowerEdge T710 memory upgrade

Hi all.

We have a PE T710 with one E5520 processor and 9 Samsung M391B5773CH0-CH9 2GB PC3-10600E DDR3 1333 ECC.

We would like to upgrade with two processors and 16 Gb of ram per processor (32 Gb intotal). Since we get clear that the processors should be the same (E5520), regarding the memory we are a bite confused. Wich should be is the best choice to go with the best performance?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Manuel,

Although the T710 itself supports DDR3 1333, the Intel E5520 CPU officially supports up to DDR3 1066 (see E5520 specs here: https://ark.intel.com/products/40200/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5520-8M-Cache-2_26-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI).

Although you've been running a single E5520 with 1333 memory, I would err on the side of caution and stick with 1066 for the upgrade, as 1333 has not been tested to work in dual CPU configurations. There are examples of dual CPU memory configurations on page 100 of this guide: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-t710_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf

Thanks,

Hi Trish.

Thank you very much for your answer. However i must apologize because the processor is NOT E5520. It is E5620. As I can see in here:

https://ark.intel.com/products/47925/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5620-12M-Cache-2_40-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI

this processor has same memory speed compatibility. In the other hand as I can see here:

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/server-poweredge-t710-technical-guide-book.pdf

page 23, it is supossed that the E5620 is not compatible with the T710, but it is working as a single processor.

I am really lost. Now the E5620 is working with two 2Gb stick in A1-A4, A2-A5, A3-A6. But if I put another same 2 Gb stick in A7, A8, and A9 it stops working.

Thank you very much

Hi Manuel,

Since the T710 doesn't support the E5620, any configuration with this CPU may not work correctly. A seemingly functional 1x E5620 setup doesn't guarantee that a 2x E5620 setup will work as well. We can't effectively troubleshoot an issue while unsupported parts are installed. The results would likely be inconsistent and not give us any answers. I suggest only using CPUs explicitly outlined in the server's documentation, and if the issue continues then at least unsupported parts can be ruled out as the cause.

Thanks,
