PowerEdge m1000e with m620 blade how to assign physical network NIC interfaces to server/blade
Folks:
We just received a Power Edge m1000e with six m620 blades. In addition, we have the cards that have the MXL 10/40 GbE and a 4x copper NIC module that slides into a slot on the blade-like network units.
This is the first time I have ever used a Blade Chassis, so I am very excited for this opportunity; however, I am lost as to how to map NIC interfaces physically to the servers. I want to start by learning how to map the physical interface ports to the servers. Once I learn the latter, I will start with virtual switching then.
So, my main question is how do I map/mount the physical interfaces to my blade servers? I have the default documentation that came with the unit; however, I do not understand a number of items. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction I can carry the ball the rest of the way just need some direction.
Thanks.

Correct; this is an extra switch that would connect to your existing switch(es). You can leave everything on the default VLAN in this switch and leave it untagged to your LAN switches, or if you wish to VLAN the traffic you have to identify which VLANs go to which ports and which vlans need to be tagged and which needs to be untagged. As everything is disabled by default on Force10, this also includes spanning-tree, so don't connect 2 cables from these switches into your lan without first turning on spanning-tree of some sort. Check the CLI guide for which options are available.

Do you have a run-through that you used? Or other documentation for this? I am very lost at this point; however, I suspect that I am not grasping some concepts for the new device. I was hoping that I could just map/assign interfaces to servers physically. But that does not sound like it is the case -
So, should I think of it as an extension of a physical network with VLAN assignment and management?
Thank you

The MXL is a switch. You cannot map a port to a server; you can isolate traffic with VLANs if desired though.
One note about Force10 (MXL or other switches); everything is disabled/shut down by default.
To get the switch working on it's basics:
- enable
- config
- interface range te1/0/1 - 32
- switchport
- no shutdown
- end
- write memory (to save the settings)
You'll have to do the same for the external ports (switchport and no shutdown), but those port numbers depend on which slot you are using, so check for the port identifiers with 'show interfaces status'.
