PowerEdge processor upgrade?
Anyone successfully upgrade the processors in their PowerEdge Server (preferrably 1800)?
Care to share your experiences: where you purchsed, how difficult, how it worked out, etc?
Thanks.

Upgraded the Procs on my 4200, 4400, 2300's and my 2400.
The 4200 originally had a single 233, upgraded it to a pair of 333's. The slot 1 procs require that you have matching stepping numbers. The 4400 is a slot 2 (xeon). About half the procs were purchased off of ebay, the others were purchased from salvage shops. The 4200 was the hardest i think because i had to update the bios for the 333's to work. It was my first bios update so it was kind of scary that way. Everything runs. Sometimes things will work that dell never checked. My 4200 is listed as having the option of 32mb edo dimms or 128mb edo dimms. It has 8 slots, i have 4 256 edo dimms installed and it runs fine, will not post more than 1024mb of ram, had 8 sticks of 256mb edo dimms installed and it only posted 1024. Removed half the ram and it posts the same. Dell says that the 4200 is tested to run up to 18gb drives, mine is running a pair of 36gb drives and 4 182gb drives and the 4 182s have IBM firmware on them, they show up as SX1181677LCV.
Was this what you were looking for??
Lots of luck to you.

Its very easy. Just make sure you get VRMs when needed. Dell is a lot less finicky about procs then say netfinity. Just make sure you use the very latest firmware and bios to ensure that you can use the most step codes.
