Problem updating iDRAC and LC on Poweredge R710
Hi,
I'm currently facing problems updating one of our Poweredge R710 (all others worked like a charm). Using OME I was able to install nearly all updates, but iDRAC (Firmware 1.10 --> 1.95) and Lifecycle Controller (Application 0 --> 1.6.0.73) won't exit successfully.
Error message in OME for ESM_Firmware_CMDN0_WN32_1.95_A00.EXE: "Execution operation exceeded specified timeout. The update failed to complete; you must restart your system and try again." (even after multiple server restarts the message is always the same).
Error message in OME for Lifecycle-Controller_Application_GFFFC_WN32_1.6.0.73_A00.EXE: "Update Failure: Secure Copy Failure - The Secure copy function has failed".
When starting the Server "System Services update required" is shown in the upper right corner of the bootscreen. I already tried ressetting the iDRAC (Ctrl + E during boot), power off the server for 30 minutes (power cables disconnected, re-connected, waited 5 minutes, powered up the server) updating thorugh System Build & Update Utility with SUU 7.3.1 and finally using the CentOS OM 7.3 Live DVD. None of it worked successfully and I have no more ideas. Maybe anyone else has one?

Here are the links needed. Fire them off from within the OS.
Drac - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-r710?driverId=63KCR&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=3287900761&languageCode=en&categoryId=ES#
Then run this, it is a Lifecycle Controller repair package. http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-r710?driverId=8F07J&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=2731110409&languageCode=en&categoryId=SV
Then update the LC with this - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-r710?driverId=F0D50&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=2984894513&languageCode=en&categoryId=SV#

Mr. Invisible,
A couple questions, what is the OS on the server? Have you tried running an update that's closer to the current version on the server? Lastly, have you tried running either update on their own?
Let us know.

Hi Chris,
the server is running W2K8 R2 SP1. I haven't tried to run a different version than those mentioned (I'll give it a try - maybe you'd like to give me the links to specific versions you'd like me to test). What I did do was to run the binaries directly and separately on the server - I got the same error messages. Since this has worked on other (even identical) machines, I suspect this somewhat to be a hardware issue. Is there any way how to reset the LC or iDRAC (differently than already done)?
Regards,
Mr_Invisible

Also, if you wish to try you can clear the NVRAM on the board by moving the jumper located between the power supplies and dimms. Apply power and then shutdown and restore the jumpers to original location.

Hi,
I was finally able to update the server. I tried connecting to iDRAC Webinterface and upload the 1.95 Firmware manually but that failed. I then reset it (to the same Version that was already on the iDRAC) and it failed again. Using the 1.96 Windows OS Installer, I was able to restore both iDRAC and LC-Firmware. I afterwards did a downgrade to 1.95 to have it on the same version as all other servers in the environment. That worked like a charm.
So thank you for your help!

Hi Chris, I know this is an old thread, but I am having issues with my Dell R710's Drac. How do I apply the Life cycle repair package? the download is in a .usc format, do I need some kind of boot up cd to apply the patch?
Thanks,
A

You can update Life Cycle Controller (.usc image) using iDRAC Web GUI update page. You can also download DUP from below link and execute from server operating system.

These links simply bring up the entire list of updates, What are the links for the specific files needed?
