R610 memory install/upgrade

Hello,

We currently have a similar config, we have 6 x 4GB of RAM totaling 24GB. We would like to get as close to 64GB as possible. I found matching 4GB sticks on Newegg, but that would only get us up to 48GB if I added another 6 in the empty slots.

I was looking at either doing a full replace of some 8GB sticks, but they are 2rX4, where what we have installed now is 2rx8. I am wondering if I bought 6 of those 8GB sticks, if I could use them in conjunction with what we have now if I matched config to channel?

Currently we have sticks in slots A1-A2-A3 and B3-B2-B1.

Wondering how best to go about it and still be optimal.

Looks like HMT351U7AFR8C there is a H9 TO AA at the end of that.

Hynix 4GB 2Rx8 PC3 - 10600E 09 - 10 - EO

Yes, it is a UDIMM. It is Dell part # T192H.

Thanks

You can mix memory within a channel. The banks must be identical though. There are a lot of memory population rules that you must abide by with memory. The specifications you listed are not enough to determine if they will work. I would suggest that you review the memory population rules section of the server manual.

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for the response. I got the 6 x 8GB sticks in and we are running into issues. I believe I have tried every possible config, and none allow the server to boot when meshing 4GB and 8Gb sticks.

We had 6 x Hynix 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600 that were slotted in the white A1 A2 A3 & B3 B2 B1 slots.

I ordered 6 x Crucial 8GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800 and have tried every config I can think of. None of them trying to mix the 8GB and 4GB sticks gave me a successful boot.

I tried filling all slots first 8GB in A1A2A3 B1B2B3 and 4GB in A4A5A6 B4B5B6, no boot. And the reverse of this.
I tried 8GB A1A2 B1B2 and 4GB in A4A5 B4B5, no boot
I tried 8GB A1A4A2 and B1B4b2 and 4GB in A5 B5, no boot

And many more configurations. Any help would be appreciated, right now we are running the 6 x 8GB in the server now for a total of 48GB of RAM. I would like to be able to use some of those 4GB sticks though.

Hello

Check whether your new and old memory are buffered or unbuffered. It can also be listed as registered and unregistered or RDIMM and UDIMM. You cannot mix buffered and unbuffered memory.

Thanks

Hey Daniel,

The new stuff is definitely registered, having a hard time trying to find out if the old stuff is RDIMM or UDIMM. It is ECC, but that can go either way. Judging by the behavior I am seeing, it would venture a guess that the old RAM is UDIMM. Which makes me sad.

If you can find a part or model number on it then I can find out.

Thanks
