R710 Memory Upgrade problems

We currently have R710 single CPU server that came with 4GB of memory. Two 2GB 1Rx8 sticks in slots A2 and A3. BIOS 6.4.

We purchased four 8GB 2Rx4 to upgrade to 32GB of memory.

I did an extensive research on configurations and read the manual, but can only have 16GB or just two memory sticks in the server. In Advanced ECC A2,3 or Optimized A1,3.

Per documentation and forum suggestions I should be able to install memory either in Advanced ECC A2,5-A3,6 or Optimized A1,4-A2,5.

However, by adding all four memory sticks we just get blank screen, and system doesn't boot.

Any help is appreciated!

Probably the wrong memory ... what exactly did you get?

RE: R710 Memory Upgrade problems

Hello.

Have tried to boot the server with the new memory?

Hynix 2GB 1Rx8 PC3L-10600E-9-10-D0 (HMT325U7BFR8A-H9 TO AC 1134

The original memory that you are using is Unbufferred memory (UDIMM) and the new memory is Registered memory (RDIMM). As suggested by the flash1932, RDIMMs and UDIMMs can not be mixed together. Once mixed together, the system will not boot as you have observed. Consider using either RDIMMs or UDIMMs and note that using UDIMMs restricts you maximum memory of only 24 GB. For memory capacity of greater than 24 GB, use RDIMMs

RE: R710 Memory Upgrade problems

Robert,

I am aware that UDIMMS and RDIMMS cannot be mixed so I am not using old memory at all. I am using new 8GB RDIMMS. The system boots only with two 8GB memory modules giving us 16GB. If I add addition two 8GB memory modules the system hangs.

Our goal is to use all four 8GB RDIMMS to get 32GB of total memory.

Have you inspected individual DIMMs to make sure that they are all of the same model number? Have you also tried booting with individual DIMM? Swap the paired DIMMs and see what happens. Some two DIMMs could be faulty or wrong DIMMs
