R710 refuses to take new processors

Bought R710 with 1 x E5504 processor. Picked up a pair of L5639 which is the same processor family/socket. Replaced processors, put heat sinks back on but when I press power button server starts for 1 second and dies immediately. Tried with 1 processor - same story. Put back original E5504 - works fine. RAM is compatible. All seems fine.

What could be the problem?

Good point! I will try that as soon as i'm back in the office.

I've stumbled accross few posts where iDrac firmware upgrade is necessary first before updating the bios? or am I reading something incorrectly?

What is your bios revision? I would update and see if you get the same results.

I often get that when trying to run the x56xx version procs on a very old revision since they started with only x55xx series xeons.

It would probably be worth updating the drac as they generally fixed a lot over the original couple versions of the drac firmware. That being said you should be able to just update the motherboard bios without updating the drac from my experience at least.
